Publicado por primera vez en 1904 como obra póstuma, el Tratado de Sociología de Eugenio María de Hostos es una de las obras pioneras de esta disciplina en lengua castellana. A lo largo del libro, y una vez expuesto su método, el autor enuncia leyes y diagnostica patologías sociales. Para ello estudia casos históricos y hechos sociales que considera relevantes en ese momento, como la situación de las excolonias españolas, dejando claras en todo momento sus inquietudes reformistas y emancipatorias. El sociólogo antillano construye su armazón teórico bebiendo de la mayoría de las corrientes de pensamiento más en boga en aquellos días, si exceptuamos el marxismo: en especial el positivismo y el krausismo. Hostos es además un organicista, quedando esta perspectiva patente en todo el texto, en el cual la sociedad es comparada una y otra vez a un organismo de características que llegan a lo antropomórfico.
