Rămânând fidel definirii înţelegerii geopoliticii ca ştiinţă a distribuţiei spaţiale a puterii, Tratatul de geopolitică îşi propune să convoace teoriile clasice şi moderne ilustrând cele trei etape majore ale evoluţiei preocupărilor de profil (fie sub eticheta geopoliticii, fie sub altele înrudite – relaţii internaţionale, studii strategice etc.): clasică, de război rece, post-război rece. Alături de acestea, îşi propune o adecvare a tezelor geopoliticii la contextul est-european actual, prin accentul pus pe raportul dintre organizarea politică şi organizarea etnică a teritoriului, panidei, geopolitica ortodoxiei, provocările globalizării şi ale unor procese precum integrarea europeană şi euroatlantică. Tratatul are ca scop şi introducerea unei noi direcţii de studiu, aceea a geopoliticii spiritualiste sau, cu termenul deja consacrat, noologice. El va acorda, de asemenea, o atenţie sporită reliefării contribuţiilor româneşti, clasice şi actuale la domeniu, în bună parte necunoscute cercetătorilor occidentali din domeniu.
