Lo studio dell'armonia è vissuto da molti studenti come un incubo. La materia appare arida, ricca di regole la cui inosservanza genera una caterva di errori. La possibilità di creare ottave, false relazioni...; di non ricordare la struttura di accordi e la loro risoluzione viene vissuta come un pericolo che disturba le notti dei poveri studenti.Certamente alcuni testi e metodi di insegnamento, che privilegiano l'aspetto normativo, possono generare una visione arida della materia che in realtà può aprire prospettive nuove ed interessanti nell'approccio ad una composizione. Il manuale proposto cerca di collegare in modo molto stretto le regole con il loro riscontro nella letteratura musicale. Il verificare che quanto proposto trova la sua origina nelle composizioni degli autori vivifica lo studio, lo rende più accattivante. L'allievo può così scoprire che non ci troviamo in presenza di regole "imposte dall'alto", ma che i suggerimenti contribuiscono a creare un risultato appagante e musicale.Si è poi cercato di guidare lo studente in modo graduale e chiaro (questo almeno è l'intendimento). Si forniscono molti esempi e nelle appendici dei capitoli si spiega la logica seguita nella realizzazione dei bassi.Un uso attento e corretto del testo permette di scoprire il perché di regole e risoluzioni, di entrare nel mondo meraviglioso dell'armonia che attraverso una scelta avveduta degli accordi esplicita il valore della melodia e dischiude sempre nuovi orizzonti.Giustamente Schumann sostiene, in un paragone con il gioco degli scacchi, che se la Regina (la melodia) è più potente, è pur vero che il colpo decisivo è sempre del Re (l'armonia).
