Journalists and photojournalists are exposed to traumatic events in the course of covering wars, terrorism, famine, violence, and other hostilities in the world. They often witness tragedies, destruction, and great human loss and suffering. Reporters are given minimal education or preparation for recognizing and effectively dealing with the emotional impact of witnessing and participating in distressing events. They are left vulnerable to symptoms of vicarious traumatization, and even to developing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) themselves. Whereas firefighters, police officers, and crisis workers have been well studied, there is minimal research on experiences of reporters who are exposed to traumatic events. Through the use of qualitative interviews with journalists and photojournalists, the effects of witnessing and participating in traumatic events on reporters were examined. In addition, the interviews focused on identifying other work-related stressors, reporters' use of adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies, quality of training received, and their view on training needs. Based on the findings, a training program for students of journalism was designed to augment reporters' knowledge and ability to recognize the effects of covering distressing events on self and others, improve their coping strategies, and effectively interact with and interview trauma survivors.
