Renaissance Medicine written by Vivian Nutton and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-07 with History categories.

This volume offers a comprehensive historical survey of medicine in sixteenth-century Europe and examines both medical theories and practices within their intellectual and social context. Nutton investigates the changes brought about in medicine by the opening-up of the European world to new drugs and new diseases, such as syphilis and the Sweat, and by the development of printing and more efficient means of communication. Chapters examine how civic institutions such as Health Boards, hospitals, town doctors and healers became more significant in the fight against epidemic disease, and special attention is given to the role of women and domestic medicine. The final section, on beliefs, explores the revised Galenism of academic medicine, including a new emphasis on anatomy and its most vocal antagonists, Paracelsians. The volume concludes by considering the effect of religious changes on medicine, including the marginalisation, and often expulsion, of non-Christian practitioners. Based on a wide reading of primary sources from literature and art across Europe, Renaissance Medicine is an invaluable resource for students and scholars of the history of medicine and disease in the sixteenth century.

The Dutch East Indian Company was founded about 400 years ago, and in 1641 the artificial island of Dejima in the port of Nagasaki became its base. This island represented the only bridge between Japan, at that time in self-isolation, and the European countries, the Netherlands in particular. The physician and surgeon Philipp Franz von Siebold, born in Würzburg in 1796, was appointed as factory doctor of the Dutch East Indian Company in Dejima and, later on, he made history as the scientific discoverer of Japan for the Western world. His grandfather Karl Kaspar von Siebold was the first real university surgeon in Würzburg from 1796 until 1807, and was "the prominent surgeon of Southern Germany". In commemoration of Philipp Franz von Siebold, his 200th birthday and the developments introduced by him were celebrated by various events in Nagasaki and Würzburg in 1996. The present volume casts spotlights on medicine and surgery during this time, his achievements, and his surroundings, as well as on modern developments and the relationship between Europe and Japan.

This is the second update of "A Cumulative Bibliography of Medieval Military History and Technology," which appeared in 2002. It is meant to do two things: to present references to works on medieval military history and technology not included in the first two volumes; and to present references to all books and articles published on medieval military history and technology from 2003 to 2006. These references are divided into the same categories as in the first two volumes and cover a chronological period of the same length, from late antiquity to 1648, again in order to present a more complete picture of influences on and from the Middle Ages. It also continues to cover the same geographical area as the first and second volume, in essence Europe and the Middle East, or, again, influences on and from this area. The languages of these bibliographical references reflect this geography.

First published in 2005, this encyclopedia demonstrates that the millennium from the fall of the Roman Empire to the Renaissance was a period of great intellectual and practical achievement and innovation. In Europe, the Islamic world, South and East Asia, and the Americas, individuals built on earlier achievements, introduced sometimes radical refinements and laid the foundations for modern development. Medieval Science, Technology, and Medicine details the whole scope of scientific knowledge in the medieval period in more than 300 A to Z entries. This comprehensive resource discusses the research, application of knowledge, cultural and technology exchanges, experimentation, and achievements in the many disciplines related to science and technology. It also looks at the relationship between medieval science and the traditions it supplanted. Written by a select group of international scholars, this reference work will be of great use to scholars, students, and general readers researching topics in many fields, including medieval studies, world history, history of science, history of technology, history of medicine, and cultural studies.

Aus dem Inhalt: Eröffnungsvortrag Karl Schlögel: Grenzen und Grenzerfahrungen im alten und neuen Europa Leben an Grenzen Mit Beiträgen von Gerhard Wolf, Georg Jostkleigrewe, Adam Szweda, Mario Müller, Aline Kottmann, Rafal Siminski Grenzen der Gesellschaft Mit Beiträgen von Heike Johann Mierau, Kirsten O. Furcht Und Furchtlosigkeit written by Andreas Bähr and has been published by V&R unipress GmbH this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with History categories.

In the seventeenth century, fear and anxiety served as basic concepts for personal and social self-constitution. The complex problematization of these affects is found not only in scholarly debates and literature but also in a variety of autobiographical and self-narrative sources from the Thirty Years' War and wars against the "Turks". This book highlights historical explanations of fear, anxiety and terror, contextualizing them within early modern theories and notions of affect and imagination. Further, it explores the functions of these particular "emotions of the soul" Contemporaries regularly remembered their fear of human and divine retribution, stressing its specifically violent potential. In doing so, they also instructed their readers as to the religious and moral preconditions for overcoming their fears. The present study demonstrates that, in the seventeenth century at least, the concept of "fear" was often related to the "fear of God", and as such fundmentally different from the modern "feelings" of fear and anxiety.
