- Là dove in grembo al colle, per S, cemb, bc - Ebra d’amor fuggia, per S, vlc, cemb, bc - Mia Climene adorata, per S, cemb, bc ****** (Vocal chamber music, 8) XLIV, 50 p.; 29,7 x 21 cm Intro and Apparatus in Italian and English Johann David Heinichen (1683-1729) is known mainly as a theorist, and the author of the celebrated treatise Der General-Bass in der Composition(Dresden, 1728). However he also composed several musical works such as operas, serenatas, sacred music, and a considerable group of Italian cantatas, most of them with obbligato instruments. The three cantatas presented in this critical edition feature the harpsichord in the double role of continuo and concertante instrument. In Là dove in grembo al colle, on a pastoral theme, the harpshichord part is almost a self-standing piece, rich in idiomatic figures and onomatopoeias. Ebra d’amor fuggia is on the mythological subject of Ariadne abandoned by Theseus, a most common one in the classic repertory. This text enjoined a great popularity among musicians, and was set in music by other composers. In the aria-invective Heinichen uses the obbligato harpsichord, doubled sometimes by the cello. Mia Climene adorata is a impassioned declaration of love in which there are solo passages for keyboard, ariosi according to 17th-century style, and more modern passages in the galant style.

Francesco Pollini (Ljubljana, 26 March 1762 – Milan, 17 September 1846) was the preeminent figure among Italian pianists of the early nineteenth century. A student of Mozart, he enjoyed considerable fame not only as a pianist and composer but also – and above all – as a pedagogue. In 1811, he was commissioned by the Milan Conservatory to author a piano method, the first of its kind to be published in Italy. Printed by Ricordi in 1812 and reprinted in 1834 by the same publisher, the Method develops several aspects of pianistic technique and performance practice. This critical edition, provided with a parallel English translation, presents the Method’s text and its 400 examples and exercises based on the most complete edition of 1834. The introduction retraces the complex publishing history of the Method, discusses in detail the typology of the instrument, and examines several technical and performance practice issues addressed in Pollini’s text (articulation, touch, rhythmic flexibility, improvisation, ornamentation, pedaling, etc.). The Apparatus presents the differences between the several editions and their different states.

Although supporters and critics of conductor Leopold Stokowski have disagreed over his contribution to symphonic music, a consensus developed that he was a man of paradox and mystery, an extrovert showman reclusively shy about who he was and what he was trying to do in music. This volume attempts to solve the mysteries. Includes an annotated discography.

Daniels’ Orchestral Music is the gold standard for all orchestral professionals—from conductors, librarians, programmers, students, administrators, and publishers, to even instructors—seeking to research and plan an orchestral program, whether for a single concert or a full season. This sixth edition, celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the original edition, has the largest increase in entries for a new edition of Orchestral Music: 65% more works (roughly 14,050 total) and 85% more composers (2,202 total) compared to the fifth edition. Composition details are gleaned from personal inspection of scores by orchestral conductors, making it a reliable one-stop resource for repertoire. Users will find all the familiar and useful features of the fifth edition as well as significant updates and corrections. Works are organized alphabetically by composer and title, containing information on duration, instrumentation, date of composition, publication, movements, and special accommodations if any. Individual appendices make it easy to browse works with chorus, solo voices, or solo instruments. Other appendices list orchestral works by instrumentation and duration, as well as works intended for youth concerts. Also included are significant anniversaries of composers, composer groups for thematic programming, a title index, an introduction to Nieweg charts, essential bibliography, internet sources, institutions and organizations, and a directory of publishers necessary for the orchestra professional. This trusted work used around the globe is a must-have for orchestral professionals, whether conductors or orchestra librarians, administrators involved in artistic planning, music students considering orchestral conducting, authors of program notes, publishers and music dealers, and instructors of conducting.
