Come in un castello incantato, tre mistiche guardano immagini che le fanno volare. I testi che parlano di loro traboccano di visioni ove bambini divini saltano fuori da culle celesti; fanciulle graziose in groppa ai cavalli percorrono boschi "trasformanti"; Madonne che parlano possono inchinarsi davanti alle donne o possono litigare con loro; Cristi loquaci possono animarsi, in modo da "sedurre" le mistiche, o possono sconvolgerle come i cavalieri delle favole. In questo libro si analizzano le storie di tre donne mistiche – due agiografi e e un'autobiografi a – fatte di parole sì, ma pure di immagini. Inizialmente l'attenzione è rivolta all'agio-biografi a di santa Lutgarda (1182–1246), appartenente alla raccolta di vite scritte dal domenicano Tommaso di Cantimpr頖 le Vitae matrum; Lutgarda mostra infatti di avere alcune visioni di personaggi celesti in base a come questi venivano rappresentati dall'iconografi a del suo tempo. Un'altra esperienza mistica analizzata è quella di sant'Angela da Foligno (1248–1309), una donna carnale e passionale che cerca l'Assoluto con l'aiuto delle immagini dipinte, come leggiamo nella sua autobiografi a spirituale. Il cerchio si chiude con la mistica sant'Agnese da Montepulciano (1268–1317), a sua volta molto sensibile al "potere delle immagini". Delineando le storie di queste donne, lo studio mette in luce un'indicazione metodologica che riguarda la possibilità di individuare, nella rappresentazione agiografi ca, motivi comuni fra le mistiche del Nord Europa e quelle italiane, individuando così un typus di santità femminile europea.

The aim of this book is to investigate the delicate relationship between female sanctity and madness, in a time-frame extending from medieval until contemporary times. Constellated by visions, ecstatic raptures, morbid rituals, stigmata and obsessions, the complex phenomenology of female mysticism appears in fact to be articulated and polymorphous, traversed by 'representations' that it seems possible to link to the wide spectrum of mental disorders, as well to the hagiographic stereotypes and anthropological implications. Male and female scholars from different disciplines (from history to philology, from anthropology to art history, from theology to literary criticism, from psychiatry to psychoanalysis) try to outline a thematic and problematic itinerary, intended to examine, step by step, potential pathological aspects and contexts of reference for the purpose of attempting to reconstruct the complex evolutionary trajectory of female mystical language.

L'analisi del complesso rapporto fra santità femminile, isteria e altri disturbi mentali fra Medioevo ed età moderna: questo l'importante e affascinante oggetto di cui tratta questo libro. Si indaga se le estatiche, le visionarie e più in generale le mistiche – sante, beate o venerabili –, lungi dall'essere in preda a estasi e visioni, fossero in realtà affette da disturbi della personalità e del comportamento. Attraverso una rigorosa analisi delle fonti, l'autore osserva da vicino il comportamento delle donne mistiche con la lente del moderno codice medico e arriva a concludere che la loro condotta può essere spesso ricollegata a standard e profili patologici più o meno documentabili. Un complesso e articolato lavoro di 'intersezione' di fonti agio-biografiche (cronache monastiche, diari, relazioni inedite, resoconti nosografici dei medici coevi alle mistiche censite) e iconografiche (statuette e oggetti devozionali), documenti poco noti ma attendibili e assai convincenti.
