Discover the extraordinary stories behind the world's missing works of art. Travel back in time to discover works of art that have vanished from the record, as well as those that went missing and have since been reclaimed or recovered. From the treasures of Tutankhamun to the altarpiece of Ghent, a missing Fabergé egg, and Vincent van Gogh's majestic Sunset at Montmajour, numerous masterpieces have disappeared throughout history as a result of theft, looting, natural catastrophe, or conflict... And some have resurfaced decades or even centuries later. Lost Masterpieces examines the unique story of the most significant of these artworks, the artists who created them, and those thought to be involved in their loss. It explores the various means by which museum curators and international crime investigators have unearthed missing treasures. It highlights the moral dilemma of museums that have profited from looted works of art and examines the recent "heists" made by some nations in an effort to regain their nation's stolen works of art. Delve into the mysteries of ancient Egyptian tombs, marvel at the hoards unearthed by archaeologists, and discover the skulduggery behind the disappearance of priceless Rembrandts and Vermeers. And see the world of art and antiquities in a whole new light.

This transatlantic study analyses a missing chapter in the history of art collecting, the first art market bubble in the United States. In the decades following the Civil War, French art monopolized art collections across the United States. During this “Gilded Age picture rush,” the commercial art system-art dealers, galleries, auction houses, exhibitions, museums, art journals, press coverage, art histories, and collection catalogues-established a strong foothold it has not relinquished to this day. In addition, a pervasive concern for improving aesthetics and providing the best contemporary art to educate the masses led to the formation not only of private art collections, but also of institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and to the publication of art histories. Richly informed by collectors' and art dealers' diaries, letters, stock books, journals, and hitherto neglected art histories, The New York Market for French Art in the Gilded Age, 1867-1893 offers a fresh perspective on this trailblazing era.

Excerpt from book: REPORT ON THE FINE ARTS. By RUSH C. HAWKINS, Commissioner. INSTRUCTIONS PROM THE SECRETARY OP STATE. In a letter of instructions which the writer received from the Secretary of State the following passage occurs: Your general duty is to make a thorough examination of the articles exhibited in the group of the Exposition to which you are specially assigned, and to report upon the state of such art, science, or industry in the year 1889 as shown in the Exposition. This report will be published by Congress, and is intended for the benefit of the people of the United States. I need not, therefore, impress upon you the necessity of making it thorough and exact, and at the same time of practical benefit to our fellow countrymen. When the unprecedented magnitude of the display of modern works of art at the Paris International Exhibition of 1889 is taken into consideration, the seriousness of the task imposed becomes be- wilderingly apparent. The working portion of the lifetime of the best equipped art writer living, faithfully bestowed, would not be sufficient for the success of such an undertaking. ADVERSE INFLUENCES. The value to the people of the United States of a report such as the one required seems to the writer to be open to question. Even if it were prepared by a scholar versed in the arts and equal in capacity to the best living writer upon those subjects, it is doubtful if it would exercise any perceptible influence upon the education of public taste. The crushing power of unprecedented enormous wealth concentrated in the possession of a comparatively small number of our population, and the conceit it engenders in the minds of its possessors, constitutes a sort of intangible Chinese wall, which stands as a barrier against general improvement in matters of...
