" ... No one can plausibly deny that the religious development of the peoples of Canaan (and indeed of all the ancient world around the eastern Mediterranean to the Indus river) were affected by the cultural and religious developments in Mesopotamia, the centre of the region, and a fertile region second to none known in the world, on a par with the Nile, around which another major civilization arose. This is a text of history of Mesopotamia in its own right. By the time history gets back this far, the lines become very blurred, rather like parallel lines intersecting on the horizon. Literature, religion, archaeology, sociology, psychology -- all of these disciplines become intertwined in Jacobsen's text as he looks at Sumerian society. The book is organized with an introduction, then according to time divisions of fourth, third, and second millennia, then concludes with an epilogue into the first millennium, during which the Bible as we know it (and most ancient history such as is commonly known occurred) came to be"--Amazon.com.

The twenty-four tales in this book are of the most famous lost treasures in America, from a two-foot statue reportedly made entirely of silver (the “Madonna”) and a cache of gold, silver, and jewelry that was rumored to also contain the first Bible in America to seventeen tons of gold—its value equal to the treasury of a mid-sized nation—buried somewhere in northwestern New Mexico. What makes these tales even more compelling is that none of these known-to-be-lost treasures have been discovered, although modern detecting technology has made them eminently discoverable.

"A state is not handed to a people on a silver platter." -Haim Weizmann, first president of Israel, 1948. Four generations of strong, dedicated women live through one of the greatest, most intriguing and dangerous times in Jewish history - 120 years of Zionism. Spinning a web of struggle, joy, tragedy and love, Yahrzeit uncovers the dramatic journey of a family and the rebirth of a nation. In Yahrzeit (memorial days), the family matriarchs take us on a dramatic journey through time, during the most important events of modern history in Israel. These women are fortified through troubled times by the spirits and traditions of the past, and create their own tradition - the "Yahrzeit candle lighting ceremony." By perpetuating this ritual, started in Russia by one of the two matriarchs in 1880, the women of the family transform the days of the ancient holiday of Hannukah, the Jewish holiday celebrating independence and victory, into days of personal remembrance of the journey of a remarkable family during remarkable times. Continued in Jerusalem, Lebanon, Palestine, the United States and Israel, the Yahrzeit candle-lighting ceremony becomes a symbol of the love and inescapable commitment of these women toward their people and family alike.

Rumors Of Revolution written by Jennifer Tsien and has been published by University of Virginia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-05-08 with Literary Criticism categories.

In 1682 the French explorer René-Robert Cavelier de La Salle claimed the Mississippi River basin for France, naming the region Louisiana to honor his king, Louis XIV. Until the United States acquired the territory in the Louisiana Purchase more than a century later, there had never been a revolution, per se, in Louisiana. However, as Jennifer Tsien highlights in this groundbreaking work, revolutionary sentiment clearly surfaced in the literature and discourse both in the Louisiana colony and in France with dramatic and far-reaching consequences. In Rumors of Revolution, Tsien analyzes documented observations made in Paris and in New Orleans about the exercise of royal power over French subjects and colonial Louisiana stories that laid bare the arbitrary powers and abuses that the government could exert on its people against their will. Ultimately, Tsien establishes an implicit connection between histories of settler colonialism in the Americas and the fate of absolutism in Europe that has been largely overlooked in scholarship to date.

‘[Kincaid] is able to do something that is almost never done in garden writing, and do it very well . . .’ - The New York Times Jamaica Kincaid's first garden in Vermont was a plot in the middle of her front lawn. There, to the consternation of more experienced friends, she planted only seeds of the flowers she liked best. In My Garden (Book) Kincaid gathers all she loves about gardening and plants, and examines it generously, passionately, and with sharp, idiosyncratic discrimination. This is an intimate, playful book on gardens, the plants that fill them, and the people who tend to them. Now in the Picador Collection.
