What we call today "Western Music" has been turning over millennia into a gigantic accumulation of intellectual crap seasoned with religious necromancy without anyone stopping to try to put order in this mess. The abuse of so much rancid irrationality has made it a forbidden ground for reason and that it is only accessible through the abuse of memory and repetition; of suffering, in short. From Pythagoras, who wanted to reach twelve notes by combining seven different series of seven notes each, to the monk Guido of Arezzo who had the idea of recording music with ink so that his melodies would not degenerate when going from one monastery to another. He designs the solfeggio with the obsessive idea of avoiding playing the cursed tritone that would invoke Satan, dragging any good Christian into the most terrible hells, an idea that excited the Pope of the time and that ordered his learning. Another monk could not be missing, Miguel García alias "Padre Basilio" who at the end of the 18th century put so many strings on the guitar that he found himself with the problem that he did not have enough fingers to play three notes with six strings using only four fingers, so he dedicated himself to arranging orthopedic postures so that the new instrument would not sound horrendously bad. Most musicians are unaware that we are in the 21st century, that we know how to count to twelve, that we have devices for recording music that are better than India ink, and that we have five fingers on our right hand with which to select which strings to play and not just a deformed stump to tear them. We know that sound is produced in the auditory consciousness. We also know how we hear based on our anatomy and we have done neuroscientific studies with which we have defined harmony based on subjective relative dissonances and even that the most important thing, rhythm, is what music draws. Music differs from noise in its simplicity, and if there is anything a healthy brain hates more than complex sounds.

An excerpt from the Preface of the Second Edition: THE specialty of the Treatise is twofold: Firstly, the standard laws of the ancient, strict, diatonic, artificial, or contrapuntal style are collected and systematically codified with such clearness and consistency as I have not found in earlier works, and they are distinguished entirely from those of the modern, free, chromatic, natural, or harmonic style; Secondly, though the natural chord of the dominant seventh had been more or less freely used for two, or, as lately proved, three and a half centuries prior to the appearance of this book, and though general views had grown into acceptance as to its constitution and treatment, no systematic principles of fundamental harmony had ever been deduced from the phenomena that bring that remarkable chord within the resources of the musician. Every guideless application of them was tentative in those composers who had the genius to conceive and the boldness to practise it; and those of less power copied their examples or framed empirical rules for the peculiar treatment of every special instance. Day perceived that the acoustical laws of harmonic evolution were the genesis of all music; that the natural chords springing from the dominant were imitable by the appropriation of the chromatic element upon other notes in the key ; and that these chromatic imitations of the dominant harmonies were identified with the key by their resolution upon, or progression into, other chords common to the same tonality. Mainly, he thus distinguishes the ancient and modern styles : in the former, discords differ in the quality of their intervals according to the degree of the scale from which each is reckoned, but are all governed by one series of rules for their preparation and resolution; in the latter, the fundamental discords consist of the same intervals by whichever of the notes in a key they are generated, but each differs from the others by radical progressions and by resolutions of its discordant notes peculiar to itself in its key relationship. Lastly, whereas the term diatonic defines notes according to the key signature, the term chromatic signifies notes that can only be expressed by accidentals but induce no change of key, and the two styles of music admit respectively the use of the one or the other genus of notes. Objection has been made to Day's statement that the fundamental discords are "prepared by nature" — objection that the word "prepared" means a note sounded in one part previously to the sounding of a note in another part against which the first is to form a discord, whereas the notes of the harmonic column are not sounded previously to, but coincidently with, if not subsequently to, their generator. Obviously this refers to a term and not to a principle; let the word "prepared" be exchanged for "generated" and the sense is indisputable. No musical sound is one-fold, but as every ray of light includes all gradations of colour, so every musical sound includes the boundless harmonic prism. This truth was not perceived in early ages; and, when perceived, it was regarded for its bearing on physics and not on music, and it was not applied to art. Without this guide to musical organisation, arbitrary rules were framed for combining notes in concords and discords, and for treating them in respect to what preceded and followed each. It must be supposed that intuition, rather than science, first prompted an artist to employ chords of natural evolution. In so doing particular notes in each key are selected as the available fundamental notes or generators of the chords in question, and further selection is made of some or other particular notes derived from each generator as being pertinent to the expression of the prevailing idea; such selection and sub-selection are analogous to the painter's process, who, in like manner, selects one of the seven primitive colours….
