Excerpt from Treatise on the Designing and Construction of Woven Fabrics The designing paper mostly in use is laid off in squares con taining 8 x 8, or 64 blocks. The sizes of the blocks and squares vary according to the different sizes preferred by each designer and according to the kind of fabrics to be designed. The point paper, designated by 8 x 8, is usually made with squares of 1 in size, and larger. If a design is to be made which requires a large number Of threads the designing paper with the smaller squares is to be preferred; if, on the other hand, designs are to be made which require but a small number of threads, the paper with the larger squares is preferable. The number of blocks to the square warpwise is always indicated first. Other designing papers used are 8 x 6, 8 x 7, 8 x 9, 8 x 10, 8 x x 16, 4 x 12, 6 x 12, 10 x 10, 12 x x 12, etc., etc. The heavy lines, or squares, serve as a unit for measure ment, as well as in helping to count Off the required number of blocks. In this way they help to find the size of auv design on point paper, at a glance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Weaving and Designing of Textile Fabrics: With Chapters on the Principles of Construction of the Loom, Calculations and Colour The manufacture Of worsted is supposed by some to have preceded that of woollen, and in support of this the writer Of the article in Rees' Cyclopaedia says the long stapled wool suited to the comb seems more spontaneously the produce Of uncultivated sheep than short wool, which is to be manufactured by carding. Some writers suppose the Argali species to be the original sheep. Prof. Archer says, The fact that the sheep has been so long domesticated, has caused it to be a matter Of uncertainty whether it has been derived from any Of the existing animals Of the genus 0712's. Many have entertained the opinion that it is the same animal as the Argali, 0722's Ammon, Linn., a native of the mountains of Central Asia, and a great weight of evidence in favour Of that supposition is obtained from the circumstance, that all the tribes Of people who have from time immemorial dwelt on the plains surrounding those mountains have always been pastoral in their habits and occupations. Still, however, there is no positive proof that our sheep was derived either from the Argali or any other known wild species, and the probability has been much lessened by the recent discoveries Of the remains Of sheep, mingled with stone weapons of a people who existed under such different conditions Of the earth's surface, that we may assume with as much probability that they were the progenitors Of the Asiatics, as that the latter were their ancestors. And Dr. Carpenter, in his Zoology, says the Argali is not the original sheep. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Design Texts: A Practical Treatise on Textile Design, Cloth Construction, Fabric Analysis and Calculations Weaving was practiced by the Egyptians, although little is known of their looms or the manner in which they prepared yarn for the loom. The discovery of a few wall paintings at Thebes, among which were representations of the Egyptian methods of weaving and spinning, gives us our first knowledge of ancient looms. One method was to weave the fabric in a horizontal posi tion, in fact, on the ground, the weaver sitting on the woven fabric. Vertical looms were also used, the weaver throwing the filling through the shed by means of a rod. On the end of this rod was a hook, to which the filling was attached. Two weavers were frequently employed, sitting at either side of the loom, pass ing the rod back and forth through the shed. The Greeks and Romans used vertical looms similar to the Egyptian. The cloth was woven upwards, the warp being sus pended from the top beam of the loom, and the lower ends tied in separate portions and weighted to keep the threads in tension. The filling was combed into position by means of a comb adapted for the purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Analysis of Woven Fabrics I feel that I should not be doing justice to those who have followed me did I not here pay some tribute to the work that has been carried out by lecturers in that department of the Bradford Technical College over which I have the honour to preside, and especially to the research work of Mr. Midgley, without which the present treatise would have lost much of its value. At the: time when I wrote my little treatise I could but give a skeleton-sketch of the methods whereby a fabric might not only be analysed in the Finished State but from these Finished Particulars the Loom Particulars ascertained. In the present treatise so fully are the changes from the Finished State back to the Loom Particulars for the various standard-cloths indicated that the designer may proceed without fear where previously he would not have ventured to tread. Mr. Midgley has also succeeded in bringing the Costing of Cloths up' to a previously unthought of state of efficiency. The present treatise may be regarded as a further step towards the more perfect application of scientific method.
