The overall aim of the project was to identify treatment strategies for dealing with elevated organic carbon levels in terms of organic load reduction and floc characteristics at elevated loads, and specifically to identify: the conditions under which conventional and alternative processes are suitable for use in the treatment of waters with a higher organic load, the effect of organic content on floc size, structure, strength, growth and break up, the effects of changes in floc structure on removal in physiochemical processes.

Approximately 77 percent of the freshwater used in the United States comes from surface-water sources and is subject to natural organic matter contamination according to the United States Geological Survey. This presents a distinct challenge to water treatment engineers. An essential resource to the latest breakthroughs in the characterization, treatment and removal of natural organic matter (NOM) from drinking water, Natural Organic Matter in Waters: Characterization and Treatment Methods focuses on advance filtration and treatment options, and processes for reducing disinfection byproducts. Based on the author’s years of research and field experience, this book begins with the characterization of NOM including: general parameters, isolation and concentration, fractionation, composition and structural analysis and biological testing. This is followed by removal methods such as inorganic coagulants, polyelectrolytes and composite coagulants. Electrochemical and membranes removal methods such as: electrocoagulation, electrochemical oxidation, microfiltration and ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and membrane fouling. Covers conventional as well as advanced NOM removal methods Includes characterization methods of NOM Explains removal methods such as: removal by coagulation, electrochemical, advanced oxidation, and integrated methods

Optimization And Modelling Of Drinking Water Treatment Processes For Waters Of The River Murray South Australia written by Mohamad Fared Murshed and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Lower Murray River (S.A.) categories.

The River Murray is a very important source of drinking water for South Australia's residents. This river provides more than 80% of the drinking water supply for South Australia and is also a key source of water for agriculture. Due to the recent La Nina events impacting on Australia, this river has received high runoff waters from catchments leading to serious floods where waters contained high concentrations of natural organic matter (NOM) and high levels of suspended solids. Changes in the quality of river water due to the floods has led to operational challenges at conventional water treatment plants especially in coagulation, flocculation and settling processes so that drinking water quality standards are maintained. The includes the treatment of waters with high concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). DOC can cause taste, odour and colour problems, disinfection by-products (DBPs) and enhance biological growth in distribution systems. Therefore, in order to maintain high quality drinking water during rapid water quality changes, research was conducted, as reported in the thesis. The research for this PhD thesis was conducted to : firstly assess the treatability of NOM and secondly, develop new modelling approaches to facilities the provision of high-quality drinking water in South Australia (SA).

As part of the effort to balance water treatment processes between allowing pathogenic infection by doing too little, and raising the risk of cancer with by-products of the treatment, 20 papers from a symposium in Chicago, August 1995, present information on the chemical identity of natural organic matter and its interactions with the inorganic precursor bromide ion. They review the history of natural organic matter in water treatment and the impact of regulations, then plunge into reports on an economical experimental approach to developing predictive models for by-products of disinfection, a comparison of analytical techniques for determining cyanogen chloride in chloraminated drinking water, the effect of ozonation and biotreatment on molecular size and hydrophilic fractions of natural organic matter, removing bromate ion by electric-arc discharge and high-energy electron beam processes, and other topics. Economic development, population growth, and environmental pollution evolving in many parts of the world are placing great demands on existing resources of fresh water and reflecting a "water crisis". Resource management, efficient utilization of the water resources, and above all water purification are all alternatives to resolve the water crisis. Purification approaches include traditional approaches that have lasted for several centuries without major modifications as well as new innovative approaches. This book covers a number of water quality issues relevant to either improving the existing treatment methods or to new advanced approaches. The book has 15 chapters distributed over four sections titled: [1] Management and Modeling of Treatment Systems, [2] Advanced Treatment Processes, [3] Treatment of Organic-contaminated Water, and [4] Advanced Monitoring Techniques.
