Excerpt from Trees, Fruits, and Flowers of Minnesota, Vol. 30: 1902 Mr. Loring's activity and unselfish efforts in movements pertaining to civic welfare and embellishment in the city of his adoption are recognized and appreciated by all who sympathize with such labors and estimate the results at their true significance, both in the present and future. His earliest effort in securing park property is not generally remembered. It related to the triangle now occupied by the Old City Hall, which through his persuasion was deeded to the city by the different owners; and the council was also persuaded to vote funds for a suitable fence. From that date, 1864, he has been indefatigable in striving to secure land and perfect a park system, which is already counted as one of the main attractions of Minneapolis. A natural taste in this direction has happily been foreign lands, when keen observation, love of nature and intercourse with those of kindred minds have all contributed to render this pursuit a veritable passion. Mr. Loring was one of the early members of the Minnesota State Horticultural Society, and one of the committee which revised its earlier constitution, and enjoys contrasting those former days with the present importance and success attending this organization - a success which appeals to him in every way: as a citizen of Minnesota, a lover of the country, a believer in farming pursuits, an admirer of fruits and flower culture and an ardent advocate of enlightened forestry. Excerpt from Trees, Fruits and Flowers of Minnesota, 1903, Vol. 31: Embracing the Transactions of the Minnesota State Horticultural Society From December 1, 1902, to December 1, 1903 At the age of sixteen the youth Clarence entered the University of Minnesota, then a struggling school under the management of Prof. W. W. Folwell, whose kindly commendations and cheerful incentives to the higher ideals of living were one Of the strong formative in uences Of this period of his life. After three years spent in the scientific course, the death Of his step-father and the failing health Of his mother seemed to require his presence, as the eldest child, at home. In 1876 he moved to a farm one mile southeast of the city and began the occupation of a general farmer, paying some special at tention to the raising of draft horses. His natural bent toward horticulture, however, kept him planting and improving his place, and for his own convenience he soon found himself with a small nursery of evergreens and ornamental trees. The sale of the surplus from this led him by degrees into the commercial nursery busi ness, which in the year 1900 had assumed a magnitude that made it seem necessary to transplant it to a soil better adapted to the purpose than the cold heavy clay upon which it was begun. In that year he therefore left the home of his first choice, endeared to all his family by the many ties Of a long residence, and moved to a tract on the Opposite side of the city which a variety Of soils seemed to mark as especially intended for nursery purposes, and where the finest Old orchard in that section, and a situation of un usual sightliness, does much to make the family feel at home in their new location. This gathering was held under most auspicious circum stances, everything combining apparently to make the meeting one of unprecedented success in the records of the society. Even' the weather was favorable for this purpose, being one of the mildest weeks known in the early part of December in this local ity. The attendance was all and even more than anticipated. The badge book, which represents the notification of those who will be present at the meeting, showed 421 names, of which eighty-three were ladies, that being a somewhat larger number than the badge book of 1915 contained.
