ADHD is characterised by learning and behavioural problems including short attention span, impulsivity, hyperactivity and impairments in perceptual, language and motor skills. Between 4-10 per cent of school-age children are believed to have it with boys outnumbering girls 2-3 to one. An adult form is also now recognised. The symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder are caused by a neurological dysfunction within the brain. The underlying physiological mechanism which causes Attention Deficit Disorder is still not thoroughly understood and remains under intense scientific study. It is presumed that brain chemistry is out of balance and that specific chemicals called neurotransmitters may be lacking in individuals with Attention Deficit Disorder. Leading-edge research from around the world is presented in this new volume.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent childhood psychiatric condition, with estimates of more than 5% of children affected worldwide, and has a profound public health, personal, and family impact. At the same time, a multitude of adults, both diagnosed and undiagnosed, are living, coping, and thriving while experiencing ADHD. It can cost families raising a child with ADHD as much as five times the amount of raising a child without ADHD (Zhao et al. 2019). Given the chronic and pervasive challenges associated with ADHD, innovative approaches for supporting children, adolescents, and adults have been engaged, including the use of both novel and off-the-shelf technologies. A wide variety of connected and interactive technologies can enable new and different types of sociality, education, and work, support a variety of clinical and educational interventions, and allow for the possibility of educating the general population on issues of inclusion and varying models of disability. This book provides a comprehensive review of the historical and state-of-the-art use of technology by and for individuals with ADHD. Taking both a critical and constructive lens to this work, the book notes where great strides have been made and where there are still open questions and considerations for future work. This book provides background and lays foundation for a general understanding of both ADHD and innovative technologies in this space. The authors encourage students, researchers, and practitioners, both with and without ADHD diagnoses, to engage with this work, build upon it, and push the field further.

This study examined the performance of 94 children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) on the recently re-normed Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, fifth edition (SB5). Data was analyzed regarding the usefulness of SB5 shared ability composites in the diagnosis of ADHD. Comparisons were made between the performance of the ADHD and normative samples, as well as within the ADHD group. No consistent profile of shared abilities was present for the ADHD sample. Attention and Concentration was the only area where performance was significantly lower than the Residual Full Scale mean. However, this Shared Ability composite only identified 22% of the sample with ADHD as having this weakness, and failed to provide an accurate diagnosis of ADHD more than 77% of the time. Results and implications were discussed. Limitations of the current study were indicated, as well as recommendations for further research.

"This monograph comprises three chapters, each focusing on a different aspect of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Chapter One presents an overview of diverse pharmacological therapies and differences in the mechanisms of action of psychostimulants, non-psychostimulants, and other treatments for ADHD. Chapter Two evaluates the effects of practical interventions for students with ADHD pursuing higher education. Chapter Three describes how multimedia formats, which simultaneously provide visual and verbal information, can help students learn by taking advantage of "dual processing," wherein information is processed through two channels instead of through a single channel. This approach to teaching is speculated to be particularly beneficial for students with ADHD"--
