La première partie de ce livre, "Une nouvelle attitude", décrit les principaux aspects de cette approche. La deuxième partie, "Les maisons", est la découverte de la maison italienne de Tricia Guild, avec sa façon tout à fait moderne d'introduire la couleur dans un cadre ancien ; quatre autres maisons, qu'elle a également décorées, illustrent son amour des matériaux naturels, d'une certaine nudité, l'utilisation moins rigide des tissus et l'emploi des couleurs vives. La troisième partie, "Vie quotidienne et réceptions", est une exhortation à bien vivre sa vie et à faire correspondre cette attitude nouvelle et généreuse dans la décoration de la maison avec la vie qu'on y mène. Tricia Guild s'inspire du paysage environnant - les champs de coquelicots, les terrasses de pierre ponctuées de cyprès, l'éclat du printemps sur la terre ocre - autant que des traditions décoratives et du riche héritage artistique de l'Italie, pour mettre au point sa palette, ses juxtapositions de textiles, ses décors de table et ses recettes. Les pièces débordent de couleurs, la cuisine regorge de produits frais et de bouquets d'herbes sèches, les bouteilles et les cruches conservent les trésors de l'été. A l'extérieur comme à l'intérieur, les tables sont dressées avec des nappes brodées, des brassées de fleurs du jardin, des assiettes dépareillées et colorées et les plats délicieux du terroir. Toutes les idées présentées sont faciles à réaliser à peu de frais : les rideaux sont de simples lés de tissu sans ourlet, bordés d'une couleur contrastée, les dessus-de-lit sont larges et simplement noués avec une bande de tissu ; la peinture pure et éclatante est directement appliquée sur les murs de plâtre ; les canapés et les fauteuils sont drapés de confortables étoffes. Même si vous ne vivez pas dans une ferme restaurée de Toscane, cette conception décorative simple et structurée, ces façons nouvelles d'utiliser la peinture, les textiles et les meubles sont très faciles à adopter : elles amélioreront votre cadre de vie, où que se trouve votre maison.
