A la vez que presenta un audaz panorama de la vida política de México entre 1940 y 1996. La presidencia imperial constituye una crónica de la corrupción nacional. Si en un principio los protagonistas colectivos -poderes formales, prensa, empresarios, Iglesia, partidos de oposición, intelectuales- giraron con diversos grados de subordinación alrededor del sol presiden- cial, han terminado por advertir, impugnar y, en algunos casos, superar esta condición. Al dar cuenta de este proceso en el más ambicioso e irónico de sus libros, Krauze muestra el universo cerrado de un sistema político cuyo primer mandamiento ha sido el de proteger con doble llave los secretos de la familia.

El profesor Hernández Solís logra un acierto metodológico tremendo al compaginar tanto la reflexión sociológica relativa a los principios básicos del neoliberalismo como ideología –la teología económica de mercado, el individualismo filosófico y la idea del egoísmo y cálculo racional en la economía-; con un recorrido histórico que permite observar las condiciones temporales y acontecimientos que permitieron florecer al sentido común neoliberal mexicano, y toma como eje rector de su análisis a los grandes portavoces de ese ideario en México, que el autor, con gran acierto, divide en dos grupos: uno que contaba con un prestigio académico y cierto enfoque histórico con el cual interpretar la realidad (donde descuellan historiadores como Aguilar Camín y Enrique Krauze) y otro que, sin la menor solidez intelectiva, funge como repetidor de consignas y emisarios de panfletos, como si fueran productores en masa de ideas chatarra (y en ese campo el autor ubica a autores de pasquines falsificadores de la historia, como Francisco Martín Moreno, cuyo fin no es reabrir debates de temas del pasado, sino desprestigiar a personajes y procesos que ellos consideran precursores de cualquier viso de solidaridad o colectividad).
