What later became known as the 'Tripoli Enterprise' describes the Italian conquest and occupation of North Africa. The 'Enterprise' aimed at acquiring Tripoli and Cyrenaica from the Turks, partly in order to assuage Nationalist feelings within Italy, and partly to establish North African colonies alongside her rivals, Britain and France. As a military operation the campaign was not a remarkable success, for the Turkish forces were already preoccupied with troubles nearer home against the Balkan States. Nonetheless, the expedition gained the close attention of a Europe already straining towards the greater conflict of 1914, and the author was one of many correspondents sent to relay news of the war. Italy in North Africa includes contemporary accounts of the conflict along with vivid descriptions of the area of operations, supported by many interesting photographs and several maps. Together these form a unique record of a period of history vital to the development of North Africa.

Excerpt from Italy in North Africa, an Account of the Tripoli Enterprise This book is an attempt to give a reasonably full and fair account of the Tripoli enterprise. I have thought it unnecessary to burden the narrative of events with the details of my own experiences: the public must be weary of the stressed personal note. It seems enough to say that I arrived in Tripoli on November 19, 1911, and left on April 1, 1912; that during the nineteen weeks of my stay I was given all possible liberty of movement and investigation within the area occupied by the Italians, and that I availed myself fully of the freedom permitted. In describing those operations which took place outside the radius and period of my own experience I have relied, in the first place, upon the private official reports of the Italian military authorities, and, in the second place, upon the accounts of numerous eyewitnesses and participants, given to me in writing or in conversation. That all errors in detail have been avoided is unlikely; but I believe that in every case the general picture is substantially correct. The three large maps are reproduced from maps compiled by the military authorities in Tripolitania during the war, and my thanks are due to General Spingardi, the Italian Minister of War, and to General Caneva, late Governor and Commander-in-Chief in Tripolitania, for their kindness in supplying me with copies of these maps and allowing me to make use of them. Architecture And Tourism In Italian Colonial Libya written by Brian McLaren and has been published by University of Washington Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Architecture categories.

To be a tourist in Libya during the period of Italian colonization was to experience a complex negotiation of cultures. Against a sturdy backdrop of indigenous culture and architecture, modern metropolitan culture brought its systems of transportation and accommodation, as well as new hierarchies of political and social control. Architecture and Tourism in Italian Colonial Libya shows how Italian authorities used the contradictory forces of tradition and modernity to both legitimize their colonial enterprise and construct a vital tourist industry. Although most tourists sought to escape the trappings of the metropole in favor of experiencing "difference," that difference was almost always framed, contained, and even defined by Western culture. McLaren argues that the "modern" and the "traditional" were entirely constructed by colonial authorities, who balanced their need to project an image of a modern and efficient network of travel and accommodation with the necessity of preserving the characteristic qualities of the indigenous culture. What made the tourist experience in Libya distinct from that of other tourist destinations was the constant oscillation between modernizing and preservation tendencies. The movement between these forces is reflected in the structure of the book, which proceeds from the broadest level of inquiry into the Fascist colonial project in Libya to the tourist organization itself, and finally into the architecture of the tourist environment, offering a way of viewing state-driven modernization projects and notions of modernity from a historical and geographic perspective. This is an important book for architectural historians and for those interested in colonial and postcolonial studies, as well as Italian studies, African history, literature, and cultural studies more generally.
