Modernity's Metonyms considers the representation of temporal frameworks in stories by the nineteenth-century Spanish authors, Leopoldo Alas and Antonio Ros de Olano. Adopting a metonymic approach_exploring the reiteration of specific associations across a range of disciplines, from literature, philosophy, historiography, to natural history_Modernity's Metonyms moves beyond the consideration of nineteenth-century Spanish literary modernity in terms of the problem of representation. Through an exploration of the associations prompted by three themes, the railway, food, and suicide, it argues that literary modernity can be considered as the expression of the perception that a linear model of time bringing together the past, the present and the future, was fragmenting into a proliferation of simultaneous moments. It draws French, German, American and British writers into discussion of stories by the canonical author Alas, and Ros de Olano, an author who is receiving increasing attention from scholars of nineteenth-century Spanish literature. Recent scholarship in the field of nineteenth-century Spanish literature and culture has challenged the thesis of 'retraso,' the thesis that Spain lagged far behind its European neighbors. Building on this scholarship, this monograph incorporates shorter works of experimental prose fiction into discussions of nineteenth-century literary modernity in Spain. It further expands the field by combining analysis of the writing of the canonical author, Leopoldo Alas with stories by Antonio Ros de Olano, whose work has been receiving increasing attention from scholars in the field. Rather than thinking of these works in terms of the ways they conform to established models provided by either contemporaneous French and British works, or by fin de siglo and early twentieth-century Spanish literature, Modernity's Metonyms works inductively. It builds outwards from the seven stories studies, identifying patterns of associations shared with writing by figures as diverse as Ludwig Feuerbach, Thomas Carlyle, Emilio Castelar, Briere de Boismont, P.J. Cabanis, or Jean-Anselme Brillat-Savarin. The seven stories discussed are Alas's 'Do-a Berta,' 'Zurita,' 'Cuervo' and 'Cuento futuro,' and Ros de Olano's 'Jornadas de retorno escritas por un aparecido,' 'Maese Cornelio TOcito,' and 'La noche de mOscaras.'

El libro Globalización financiera: banca, regulación y crisis, escrito por el profesor Beethoven Herrera Valencia, plantea temas. de indudable vigencia e interés académico y de política pública. El abordaje que el autor propone de la historia de los centros financieros mundiales, las experiencias de las crisis y del proceso de regulación, junto con la valoración de la pertinencia de las políticas que las instituciones multilaterales exigen como condición para el otorgamiento de los créditos, coinciden con un clima muy extendido de inquietudes respecto de esos tópicos. Además, la reciente crisis hipotecaria de Estados Unidos y sus implicaciones anivel mundial, lo mismo que los severos desequilibrios que viven países como Grecia, Irlanda, España y Portugal, constituyen un buen contexto para analizar si el actual instrumental teórico e institucional permite prevenir y manejar racionalmente las crisis.Un aspecto destacable que aporta el autor con respecto a la interpretación de las causas de la crisis hipotecaria es el componente laboral: los efectos negativos que la flexibilización laboral generó sobre los trabajadores en situación de ingresos precarios hizo que no pudieran amortizar sus viviendas, con lo cual los bancos idearon figuras innovadoras para otorgar créditos a personas sin capacidad de pago, dando paso a la financiación de las viviendas con créditos no recuperables, a la vez que diseñaban mecanismos de empaquetamiento de las hipotecas a través de derivados financieros que solo trasladaban, sin resolver, la crisis acumulada.

Studies that connect the Spanish 17th and 20th centuries usually do so through a conservative lens, assuming that the blunt imperialism of the early modern age, endlessly glorified by Franco's dictatorship, was a constant in the Spanish imaginary. This book, by contrast, recuperates the thriving, humanistic vision of the Golden Age celebrated by Spanish progressive thinkers, writers, and artists in the decades prior to 1939 and the Francoist Regime. The hybrid, modern stance of the country in the 1920s and early 1930s would uniquely incorporate the literary and political legacies of the Spanish Renaissance into the ambitious design of a forward, democratic future. In exploring the complex understanding of the multifaceted event that is modernity, the life story and literary opus of Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) acquires a new significance, given the weight of the author in the poetic and political endeavors of those Spanish left-wing reformists who believed they could shape a new Spanish society. By recovering their progressive dream, buried for almost a century, of incipient and full Spanish modernities, Ana María G. Laguna establishes a more balanced understanding of both the modern and early modern periods and casts doubt on the idea of a persistent conservatism in Golden Age literature and studies. This book ultimately serves as a vigorous defense of the canonical as well as the neglected critical traditions that promoted Cervantes's humanism in the 20th century.

«Llevamos el mundo en el bolsillo. Cada vez que usamos el teléfono o le damos a la llave de contacto de nuestro automóvil, estamos movilizando el mundo entero. Pero tras la globalización de capitales y mercancías, ha llegado la de las personas y las culturas. Se mezclan productos, por supuesto, pero también ideas, lenguas, literaturas, gastronomías, religiones. Ajustar nuestra conciencia a esa realidad global es el nuevo reto de la sociología. La sociología debe abandonar la fascinación estatalista que, como un velo mistificador, nos hace filtrar todo en función de esos mapas coloreados donde cada país tiene su sitio, como si viviéramos en mónadas leibnitzianas, aisladas unas de otras. Se ha dicho, con razón, que hay un hegelianismo oculto en la tradición sociológica que hace del Estado-nación el referente empírico de la palabra «sociedad». Cierto, seguimos pensando el mundo a través del filtro cognitivo de una colección de 193 unidades estatales supuestamente capaces de ser entendidas y gestionadas en aislamiento unas de otras. Tenemos que repensar ese pensamiento de modo que nuestra tarea hoy es pensar el mundo como una unidad, pues lo es. Nuestra conciencia, como nuestra experiencia, es local, está territorializada; no puede ser de otro modo. Pero nuestro ser social, la realidad que sustenta nuestra vida cotidiana, es global, y por vez primera en la historia de la humanidad, desde que esta salió de África hace unos 200.000 años, vivimos una sola historia y somos una sola sociedad.»
