This old-fashioned storybook for children aged eight to one hundred and eight is beautifully illustrated with twenty-eight full-page line drawings by Tom Nelson, who also did the illustrations for To a Different Drumbeat. According to old Scandinavian folk traditions, trolls were beings whose magic powers could only be used at night. On death, they were transformed into rocks and boulders that formed the landscape. There were many kinds of trolls: mountain trolls, forest trolls, water trolls, but the biggest and strongest of all the trolls were those who lived inside the mountains. This timeless tale is guaranteed to charm children of all ages.

6 lectures and an essay, 1919-1920 (CW 297) World War I destroyed the structures, values, and self-confidence that created the seeming greatness of the nineteenth century. In its place stood ruins and the shards of a civilization. In response to this, Emil Molt--the director of the Waldorf-Astoria Cigarette Factory and a student of Rudolf Steiner--decided to establish a school to educate people who could create a new culture. Thus, the Waldorf school movement was begun. Rudolf Steiner agreed to act as the school's consultant, and his insights guided the school in accomplishing this ambitious task. The goal of this education was that, through living inner work guided by the insights of Rudolf Steiner, the teachers would develop in the children such power of thought, depth of feeling, and strength of will that they would emerge from their school years as full members of the human community, able to meet and transform the world. These lectures occurred around the opening of the first Waldorf school. They serve as an excellent, inspiring introduction to Waldorf education as a whole. Here Steiner outlines--with freshness, immediacy, and excitement--the goals and intentions of a new form of education and speaks to parents of prospective students. He explains the school's guiding principles and describes how parents must participate, with understanding and interest, in the awakening of their children's creative forces so that a healthier society can come about. I dont think its fair to the trolls that in most literature they are described as horrible creatures. Not all of them are monsters. In my stories we are following the little, good-natured troll boy, Peter, through a summer. Together with his parents and old grandmother he lives in a hill far out on the Jutlandish moor in Denmark. Troll Peter is a curious little troll who likes to go exploring. But sometimes his adventures bring him into trouble, as when he falls down into the Bog-womans cave, and she wants him to stay there. He also ventures out to the Big Hill on Midsummer Eve and there he spots some witches flying on broomsticks on their way to The Blocken Mountain in Germany. That scares him! During the summer he meets other Danish folklore creatures, and he has many exciting adventures. Granny plays an important role in Troll Peters life. His parents are always busy providing food for the daily meals but Granny is always there, ready to comfort him. And the old troll woman knows that honey is the best medicine for all kinds of hurt. Troll Peter loves her very much.

The internationally acclaimed artists & authors are your personal guides to the enchanted world of Trolls in this book of troll tales and culture. Not since Brian Froud’s conceptual design work with Jim Henson on the classic films The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth has he created a faerie world with such imagination, dimension, depth, and detail. Trolls opens a new realm in the celebrated faerie worlds of famed artists Brian and Wendy Froud, renowned for their vast and personal knowledge of faeries, goblins, and other folk. Through their art, sculptures, and stories, the Frouds take you on a wonderous adventure into the world of trolls. Trolls live through the telling of tales and the passing on of stories, weaving them together, then letting them flow separately again, as streams, rivers, tree roots, and branches do. Stories, as they are collected, are tied to a troll’s tail: “A tale for the asking, the giving, the keeping.” Trolls includes stories of stone and bone, wood and feather, along with tale fragments, snippets of stories to be told in full down the road or ones that have been lost and are to be remembered again. Interspersed among the stories are troll customs, philosophies, and practices: How many kinds of trolls are there? Where do they live, and what do they like to eat? Why do some trolls father together while others seek solitude? Troll lore is interwoven with a vast treasure of artifacts and symbols of their world, from the wind knot to the Petrified Parsnip Poetry Pen, from the witch’s cursing bundle to the elusive Earthling Gift. Your journey through Trolls will reveal many mysteries, wonder, and enchantments, and there are no better guides for your adventure than Brian and Wendy Froud.
