Excerpt from Tropical America IN making the circuit of Tropical America described in these pages I was received with uniform kindness by the representatives of the United States Government in nearly all the capitals and ports which I visited. It is at once a duty and a pleasure to acknowledge their hospitality and aid, while it would be manifestly im proper to hold them responsible in any degree for the Opinions expressed in this volume. By introducing me to well-informed men and by many other courtesies they greatly facilitated my investigation of political and commercial conditions. I may at least express gratefully my pressing obligations to Consul Baker, of Buenos Ayres to the American Ministers in Lima, Caracas, and Mexico; to consul-general Adamson in Panama; and to consul-general Williams in Havana. I have also to thank Mr. Charles R. Flint and Mr. Irving King of New York for their courtesy in providing photographs for four of the illustrations. Orchids Of Tropical America written by Joe E. Meisel and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-15 with Gardening categories.

Orchids of Tropical America is an entertaining, informative, and splendidly illustrated introduction to the orchid family for enthusiasts and newcomers seeking to learn about more than 120 widespread orchid genera. Joe E. Meisel, Ronald S. Kaufmann, and Franco Pupulin bring alive the riot of colors, extraordinary shapes, and varied biology and ecology of the principal orchid genera ranging from Mexico and the Caribbean to Bolivia and Brazil. Orchids, likely the most diverse family of plants on earth, reach their peak diversity in the tropical countries of the Western Hemisphere, including, for example, more than 2,500 species in Brazil and 4,000 in Ecuador. The book also highlights reserves in the American tropics where travelers can enjoy orchids in the wild. Whether you journey abroad to see these unique plants, raise them in your home, or admire them from afar, this book offers fascinating insights into the diversity and natural history of orchids. Beyond the plant and flower descriptions, Orchids of Tropical America is packed with informative stories about the ecology and history of each genus. Pollination ecology is given in detail, with an emphasis on how floral features distinctive to the genus are linked to interaction with pollinators. This book also features information on medicinal and commercial uses, notes on the discoverers, and relevant historical data. The easy-to-use identification system permits quick recognition of the most common orchid groups in Central and South America. Genus descriptions are given in plain language designed for a nonscientific audience but will prove highly useful to advanced botanists as well. Descriptions focus on external morphology, and great care has been taken to ensure the guide is useful in the field without reliance on microscopes or dissections. Equally valuable as a field guide, a desktop reference, or a gift, Orchids of Tropical America will make an excellent addition to any orchid lover’s library. Evolution And Environment In Tropical America written by Jeremy B. C. Jackson and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-12-15 with Science categories.

How were the tropical Americas formed? This ambitious volume draws on extensive, multidisciplinary research to develop new views of the geological formation of the isthmus linking North and South America and of the major environmental changes that reshaped the Neotropics to create its present-day marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Recent discoveries show that dramatic changes in climate and ocean circulation can occur very quickly, and that ecological communities respond just as rapidly. Abrupt changes in the composition of fossil assemblages, formerly dismissed as artifacts of a poor fossil record, now are seen as accurate records of swift changes in the composition of ocean communities. The twenty-four contributors use current work in paleontology, geology, oceanography, anthropology, ecology, and evolution to paint this challenging portrait of rapid environmental and evolutionary change. Their conclusions argue for a revision of existing interpretations of the fossil record and the processes—including invading Eurasian peoples—that have produced it.
