Excerpt from True Stories of Durham Pit-Life My dear Mr Page, I am very pleased to be assured that our valued friend, Mr. George Parkinson, has consented to the publication of his Reminiscences of Methodism. It would have been a great disappointment, and a loss to the Wesleyan community, if he had been permitted to pass away without his experience being put in a convenient and permanent form for the use and profit of those who may succeed him. His long and strenuous life has been full of active and successful service for Christ and His Church, and the record of what he has been able to accomplish, especially among the young, will be an incentive to all to follow his example and to engage heartily in all that concerns and promotes the moral and spiritual uplifting of the community. A major contribution to women's history, labour history, and economic and social history. This book examines three different groups of women - in coal mining communities, in inshore fishing communities and in agricultural labour. It demonstrates how the work these groups undertook was fundamental in shaping their experiences as women in different ways and shows that women's experiences varied within class as well as between classes. The book illustrates how mining women, despite being restricted to domestic roles, created, through meticulous housekeeping, a power base in their homes and rendered their husbands dependent on them, while a minority took so active a role in politics that they were said to be 'the backbone of the Labour Party'; how fisher women, engaging ina household economy reminiscent of pre-modern times, exercised great influence on financial decision making through their roles in baiting lines and selling fish; and how some single female agricultural labourers exercised considerable autonomy whereas those who were tied in a family economy had little independence. Overall, the book makes a very significant contribution to women's history, to labour history and to economic and social history. "This is a tremendously useful and relevant book for historians of women as well as social and labor historians." - Professor Joan Scott, Institute of Advanced Studies, Princeton University VALERIE HALL is Professor Emerita of History at William Peace University, North Carolina

"One of Zelazny's most delightful books: Jack the Ripper's dog Snuff narrates a mad game of teams to cause or prevent armageddon." NEIL GAIMAN All is not what it seems. In the murky London gloom, a knife-wielding gentleman named Jack prowls the midnight streets with his faithful watchdog Snuff – gathering together the grisly ingredients they will need for an upcoming ancient and unearthly rite. For soon after the death of the moon, black magic will summon the Elder Gods back into the world. And all manner of Players, both human and undead, are preparing to participate. Some have come to open the gates. Some have come to slam them shut. And now the dread night approaches – so let the Game begin. Praise for A Night in the Lonesome October: “. . . this book is unique; the premise, Zelazny's writing and the atmosphere conjured up are something very special indeed.” “A geek fest extraordinaire with huge wit, warmth and intelligence.” “An absolute gem – how can you not to like something written from the perspective of Jack the Ripper's super-intelligent dog?! An outstanding example of truly original fiction.” “This is pure brilliance . . . Highly recommended.” Editorial reviews: “The last great novel by one of the giants of the genre.” George R.R. Martin “A madcap blend of horror tropes and fantasy. . . There aren’t many authors who would set out to write a novel in which the Wolfman and Jack the Ripper were the two heroes . . . And I’m not sure anyone else could have made it work.” Science Fiction Chronicle “Sparkling, witty, delightful. Zelazny’s best for ages, perhaps his best ever.” Kirkus Reviews “A cheerful, witty, well-crafted fantasy . . . Its deft, understated good humor and spare, poetic prose reaffirm Zelazny as one of fantasy’s most skilled practitioners.” Publishers Weekly
