Richard II is one of the most enigmatic of English kings. Shakespeare depicted him as a tragic figure, an irresponsible, cruel monarch who nevertheless rose in stature as the substance of power slipped from him.

The story of King Richard II of England (1367-1400, reigned 1377-1399), as told by master storyteller Jacob Abbott. A son of the famous Edward, the Black Prince, he came to the throne at just ten years of age. During his first years as king, the government was in the hands of a series of councils whose leading member was his uncle, John of Gaunt. The first major event of the young king's rule was the suppression of Wat Tyler's Peasants' Revolt of 1381. However, courtiers prevented the young king from fully exercising power, and by 1387, government of the realm had been taken over by a council known as the Lords Appellant. By 1397, Richard had overthrown this council as well, but had acquired numerous internal enemies. In 1399, one of these enemies, the exiled son of John of Gaunt, Henry of Bolingbroke, invaded England and seized the throne, imprisoning the hapless Richard II who was murdered a year later. Richard's posthumous commonly-held reputation has largely been shaped by Shakespeare, whose play Richard II portrayed Richard as a scoundrel whose overthrow by Bolingbroke was responsible for the later Wars of the Roses. This book delves into the real Richard II's personality, upbringing and actions, and provides a satisfying understanding of this tumultuous period of English history.

There have been three monarchs of the name of Richard upon the English throne.Three Richards.Richard the Crusader.Richard I. is known and celebrated in history as Richard the Crusader. He was the sovereign ruler not only of England, but of all the Norman part of France, and from both of his dominions he raised a vast army, and went with it to the Holy Land, where he fought many years against the Saracens with a view of rescuing Jerusalem and the other holy places there from the dominion of unbelievers. He met with a great many remarkable adventures in going to the Holy Land, and with still more remarkable ones on his return home, all of which are fully related in the volume of this series entitled King Richard I.King John.Richard II. did not succeed Richard I. immediately. Several reigns intervened. The monarch who immediately succeeded Richard I. was John. John was Richard's brother, and had been left in command, in England, as regent, during the king's absence in the Holy Land. After John came Henry III. and the three Edwards; and when the third Edward died, his son Richard II. was heir to the throne. He was, however, too young at that time to reign, for he was only ten years old.

Richard I, king of England from 1189 to 1199, was a brilliant soldier and military strategist. His fierceness in battle during the Third Crusade won him the title of Coeur de Lion, or Lionheart. Even his most formidable enemy, Saladin, respected Richard and feared his army. Saladin’s own emirs were terrified of the warrior they called Malek Rik. For decades following Richard’s crusade, Muslim mothers called upon his name to frighten their children into behaving. Despite his legendary heart of a lion in battle, he was honorable and generous as a king—at least for a king of his time. Richard the Lionheart was a king, a warrior, a hero, and a legend in his own time.
