Die messianisch-jüdische Bewegung stellt mit ihrer Existenz eine Herausforderung und eine Irritation für die christlichen Kirchen und den jüdisch-christlichen Dialog dar. Messianische Juden werden häufig mit "Judenmission" identifiziert, was eine Beschäftigung mit ihnen problematisch erscheinen lässt. Doch sind jesusgläubige Juden in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus in Leidensgemeinschaft mit ihrem Volk umgebracht worden. Eine Theologie, welche auf die Opfer von damals hören will, kann die Messianischen Juden nicht einfach ignorieren. Das vorliegende Buch will deshalb diese umstrittene Bewegung vorstellen. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf den Messianischen Juden in Israel, weil Israel eines der beiden bedeutendsten Zentren der Bewegung ist. Außerdem sind in Israel die verschiedenen Richtungen der Bewegung beispielhaft repräsentiert: Israelische, amerikanische, russischsprachige wie auch äthiopische Messianische Juden sind dort vertreten. In der vorliegenden Untersuchung wird einerseits die Geschichte der Bewegung beschrieben, andererseits wird dargestellt, wie sich messianisch-jüdisches theologisches Denken in den letzten hundert Jahren entwickelte. Darüber hinaus wird analysiert, welche kulturellen Strömungen und Denker die Bewegung geistig prägten. Abschließend werden Ergebnisse der Arbeit mit deutschsprachiger protestantischer Theologie ins Gespräch gebracht. Unterschiedliche theologische Ansätze zum Verhältnis von Israel und Kirche werden diskutiert und es wird gefragt, was messianisch-jüdisches Denken für sie austragen könnte.
