The hazards associated with tsunamis are well known and have been studied for decades. The majority of research is, however, focused on open coastlines which bear the brunt of a tsunamis force. Other regions that can be strongly impacted by a tsunami are large estuaries. Here, the tsunami encounters a long shallow body of water and is able to propagate much further than it would on land. Understanding the extent of tsunami propagation in rivers and the speed at which they propagate is important for the creation of timely and effective warning systems for communities along large estuaries. The present study investigates tsunami inundation and propagation up estuaries as a function of geometric shape, river discharge, and tidal state. This is accomplished by modeling tsunami wave-trains in three highly idealized estuaries, modeling a single tsunami wave-form in a local Columbia River Estuary grid, and by modeling an actual Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake in a regional Eastern North Pacific grid. Comparison of water surface elevations in the three idealized estuaries indicate that faster estuary convergence causes greater energy dissipation but focuses the remaining energy resulting in higher energy density and larger tsunami waves. Changes in river discharge proved to have a minimal impact on tsunami propagation while changes in tidal state had large impacts.

A theory is presented which describes the propagation of large amplitude Tsunamis across a basin of variable depth in the limit when this depth is varying slowly on a scale defined by the wavelength. In part I only the off-shore behavior is considered, in part II some features of the final run up are described. The technique used is to regard the wave as a slowly modulated simple wave with a slowly changing Riemann invariant. One of the most significant results is that over distances where the effect of depth variation modulates the amplitude of the wave, but does not disperse it, the variations of the amplitudes of the flow variables, such as maximum surface elevation, can be calculated as functions of the undisturbed depth without knowing how this depth varies in distance and without knowing the wave profile. Earthquake-tsunamis, including the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and the 2011 Tōhoku Tsunami in Japan, serve as tragic reminders that such waves pose a major natural hazard. Landslide-tsunamis, including the 1958 Lituya Bay case, may exceed 150 m in height, and similar waves generated in lakes and reservoirs may overtop dams and cause significant devastation. This book includes nine peer-review articles from some of the leading experts in the field of tsunami research. The collection represents a wide range of topics covering (i) wave generation, (ii) wave propagation, and (iii) their effects. Within (i), a tsunami source combining an underwater fault rupture and a landslide are addressed in the laboratory. Within (ii), frequency dispersion with the nonlinear shallow-water equations is considered and a detailed account of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, tsunami, and fire in downtown Lisbon is presented.
