Mais quels procédés, quelle sagesse, voire quel miracle, ont permis à cette étrange organisation de surmonter l'obstacle décisif : le temps ? Qui a fait quoi ? Quelles défaites l'Église a-t-elle subies ? Quelles erreurs capitales a-t-elle commises ? Des centaines de papes se sont succédé sur le trône de Pierre, dont tout le monde ignore les noms. De leur existence, on ne connaît à peu près rien. Quelle aventure, pourtant ! Rome a été envahie près de vingt fois, et détruite cinq fois. Des dizaines de papes ont dû fuir leur ville, pour éviter d'être assassinés. En vérité, l'histoire de l'Église est une tempête dont le fracas n'est pas venu jusqu'à nous.
