"In the summer of 1994, MIT was charged by the Federal Highway Administration to assess the feasibility of 'Tube Transportation.' Tube transportation intends to relieve congestion on city streets by removing much of the truck traffic and transporting freight with electrically propelled vehicles in tubes, or through a combination of tube and limited surface transport. The FHWA project consisted of two major parts: 1. assessing the technical and economic feasibility of tunneling to create tubes in cities, and 2. assessing the technical and economic feasibility of the vehicle/propulsion system. This report addresses the technical and economic feasibility of tube tunneling, and it is, in turn, subdivided in two parts. Part I provides estimates of costs to build tube networks of different density and size in typical city scenarios. Part II looks into the future and provides estimates on the effect of new technology on construction and time"--Pref.

This work illustrates how the Analysis of Controlled Deformation in Rocks and Soils (ADECO-RS) is used in the design and the construction of tunnels. This is a very new and effective way of tunnel construction. The ADECO-RS approach makes a clear distinction between the design and the construction stages and allows reliable forecasts of construction times and costs to be made. It uses the advance core (the core of ground ahead of the face) as a structural tool for the long and short term stabilisation of tunnels, after its rigidity has first been regulated using conservation techniques.
