Tulane is the story of a southern school striving for national recognition in the post–World War II era of American research universities. Clarence L. Mohr and Joseph E. Gordon pre-sent a candid, in-depth treatment of the 150-year-old New Orleans institution during this transformative period, when it grappled with such pervasive issues as federal and private funding; academic freedom; an enrollment surge set in motion by the GI Bill and sustained by the postwar “baby boom”; the cold war; desegregation; the antiwar, civil rights, and student-power movements; expanding intercollegiate athletics; censorship; the clash between liberal and utilitarian conceptions of higher learning; revision of curricular content; and the role of universities as platforms for social criticism—all of which together profoundly altered the mission of American higher learning. In addition to these external forces, the authors examine the many individuals—administrators, professors, and students—whose responses in both calm and crises shaped the evolution of Tulane’s unique academic, physical, and demographic design. Like its regional peers in the 1950s and 1960s, Tulane faced the challenge of transcending its past without repudiating traditions of lasting value. From a loose confederation of locally oriented undergraduate and professional schools, it developed into a nationally focused research university serving a diverse student body selected through rigorous admissions standards. Its journey over the past half century should remind those who support, study, or teach in American universities that their own institutions during that period have in a very real sense made history as well.

Join Tulane University Archivist Ann E. Smith Case as she recounts the history of this illustrious university using vintage images. Tulane University was founded as the Medical College of Louisiana in 1834 by seven young doctors who saw the need for trained physicians in the city of New Orleans. In 1847, it evolved into the public University of Louisiana, also offering law, liberal arts, and science coursework; it became a private institution in 1884 after Paul Tulane's donation. The addition of Newcomb College, the nation's first coordinate women's college, completed the university's basic structure in 1886. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck, forcing Tulane to close for a semester. It emerged from the floodwaters restructured and renewed into the progressive university focused on public service that it is today. The photographs in this book take readers through the collegiate experience of former Tulane and Newcomb students to illustrate the meaning of the Tulane motto, "Non sibi sed suis"--"Not for one's self, but for one's own."

On a brisk January morning in 1888, nine young men from Tulane University faced off against nine young men from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge to play base ball. Tulane won 22 to 8 in what was Louisiana's first intercollegiate sporting event, and thus began one of the great sports rivalries in the state's history, a tradition that continues more than a century later. As baseball's popularity grew across America, the game thrived at Tulane, which produced numerous conference champions, scores of professional players, and one president of the American League. Experiencing increased national prominence, the university has announced plans for a major expansion of Turchin Stadium, which is sure to make Tulane's one of the premiere baseball facilities and programs in the country.

By the time the floodwaters receded in early September of 2005 after the onslaught of Hurricane Katrina, Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, had suffered losses of $650 million. School administrators were faced with the daunting task of rebuilding. Seeking direction, the staff looked to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and its renewal efforts after it was destroyed by fire by Union forces during the Civil War in 1865. In When Universities are Destroyed, author Jack Kushner describes the destruction of each university and compares each institutions efforts to overcome adversity, rebuild, and once again provide education to its students. Kushner details how Tulane University cleaned up from the hurricane, and with the adroit leadership of President Scott Cowen, reopened six months later. This history book also shows how the reconstruction period in the South delayed the rebuilding of the University of Alabama. Examining both the similarities and differences between the two universities, When Universities are Destroyed provides a vivid picture of how Tulane University and the University of Alabama faced the destruction of their campus and found the fortitude to move forward.
