SODASTA RAUHAAN SUEZILLA YK:n suomalaisen valvontajoukon alku ja ankeus 1973-1974 Lokakuun 6. päivänä 1973 aloittivat Egypti ja Syyria jom kippur-sotana tunnetun hyökkäyksen Israelia vastaan. YK:n turvallisuusneuvosto päätti 25.10.1973 yksimielisesti asettaa aseistetun rauhanturvajoukon valvomaan 22.10.1973 solmitun osapuolten välisen tulitaukosopimuksen noudattamista Suezin kanava-alueelle ja Siinaille. Rauhanturvajoukon, (Second) United Nations Emergency Force, UNEF II, komentajaksi nimitettiin alueella jo ollut suomalainen kenraalimajuri Ensio Siilasvuo, joka oli tuolloin YK:n sotilastarkkailijaorganisaation UNTSO:n esikuntapäällikkö. Siilasvuo perusti uuden esikuntansa Kairoon. YK:n palokunta Suezin kanava-alueelle oli saatava nopeasti rauhanturvajoukkoja. YK päätti lähettää Kyproksella palvelevista Suomen, Ruotsin ja Itävallan pataljoonista vapaaehtoisosastot Egyptiin 26.10.1973. Suomen pataljoonasta ilmoittautui komentajansa, everstiluutnantti Aulis Kemppaisen, ja operatiivisen toimiston päällikön, majuri Martti Jokihaaran johdolla 208 sotilasta. Suomen osasto - YK:n palokunnaksikin kutsuttu - saapui Kairon kautta Suezin kaupungin läheisyyteen Israelin armeijan valvomalle alueelle jo 27.10.1973 ja siirtyi, tai paremminkin tunkeutui vielä taistelevien osapuolten väliin 28.10.1973 lopettaen sotatoimet parin päivän kuluessa. YK:n Suomalainen valvontajoukko 1 Vuonna 1964 säädetyn Valvontajoukkolain perusteella Puolustusministeriö oli ylläpitänyt ja kouluttanut vapaaehtoisia vakinaisen väen päällystöstä ja reserviläisistä koottua valmiusjoukkoa. Pääesikunta hälytti 25.10.1973 illalla valmiusjoukon komentajan ja esikunnan tärkeimmät upseerit, joiden oli ilmoittauduttava jo seuraavana aamuna YK-Koulutuskeskuksessa Niinisalossa. Siellä heidät varustettiin ja rokotettiin. He lähtivät 29.10.1973 kohti Kairoa.

Tiedot käynnissä olevista operaatioista perustuvat joulukuussa 2016 saatavilla olleisiin tietoihin.

Soldiers Of Diplomacy written by Jocelyn Coulon and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-01-01 with Political Science categories.

United Nations peacekeeping troops, or 'Blue Helmets,' were first deployed in 1956 to oversee the withdrawal of French, British, and Israeli forces from the Suez Canal. Canadian Lester B. Pearson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize the following year for proposing this solution to the Suez crisis. Now forty years later, United Nations peacekeepers play a very different role from that of Pearson's lightly armed 'soldier-diplomats.' In June 1997, there were only seven UN missions in which the Blue Helmets were acting as true peacekeepers; another ten missions placed the Blue Helmets in civil conflicts where their roles ranged from evacuating threatened groups to organizing elections, and their tasks were much more dangerous. Jocelyn Coulon draws his experiences visiting nine peacekeeping missions, including Cambodia, Bosnia, and Somalia, at a pivotal point in UN history, when the UN troops were increasingly acting as warriors of a new world order. He raises important questions: How can the UN distinguish its objectives from the interests of the great powers? Could - and should - the UN maintain an independent army? How can the pitfalls encountered by the peacekeepers in Somalia and Bosnia be avoided? Finally, Coulon urges a return to the original, though less spectacular, role of the UN soldiers: keeping the peace where peace is really the goal of the parties involved. Soldiers of Diplomacy was first published in French in 1994; this new English edition has been updated to reflect recent events. The result of interviews with dozens of soldiers, officers, and officials involved in peacekeeping activities, it is a unique and thought-provoking investigation of UN peacekeeping.

Deliver Us From Evil written by William Shawcross and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-01-10 with History categories.

Reporting from war zones around the globe, acclaimed journalist William Shawcross gives us an unforgettable portrait of a dangerous world and of the brave men and women, ordinary and extraordinary, who risk their lives to make and keep the peace. The end of the Cold War was followed by a decade of regional and ethnic wars, massacres and forced exiles, and by constant calls for America to lead the international community as chief peace-keeper. The efforts of that community -- identified with the United Nations but often dominated by the world's wealthy nations -- have had mixed results. In Africa, the West is accused of indifference or too little, too late. In Cambodia, the UN presides over free elections, but the results are overridden. In Iraq, Saddam Hussein continues to defy the UN, and in Bosnia and Kosovo, the West acts hesitantly after terrible slaughter and ethnic cleansing. Shawcross, a veteran of many war zones, has had broad access to global policymakers, including UN secretary general Kofi Annan, high American diplomats, peacekeepers and humanitarian-aid professionals. He has traveled with them to some of the world's most horrifying killing fields. Deliver Us from Evil is his stark, on-the-ground report on the many crises faced by the international community and its servants as they struggle to respond around the world. He brings home the price many have paid attempting to restore peace and help alleviate terrible suffering. He illuminates the risks we face in a complex and dangerous world. Some critics have concluded that some interventions may prolong conflict and create further casualties. The lesson we learn from ruthless and vengeful warlords the world over is that goodwill without strength can make things worse. Shawcross argues that recent interventions -- in Kosovo and East Timor, for example -- provide reason for concern as well as hope. Still, the unmistakable message of the past decade is that we cannot intervene everywhere, that not every wrong can be righted merely because the international community desires it, or because we wish to remove images of suffering from our television screens. Nor can we necessarily rebuild failed states in our image. When we intervene, we must be certain of our objectives, sure of popular support and willing to expend the necessary resources -- even lives. If our interventions are to be effective and humane, they must last for more than the fifteen minutes of attention that the media accord to each succeeding crisis. That is a tall order. As Shawcross concludes, "In a more religious time it was only God whom we asked to deliver us from evil. Now we call upon our own man-made institutions for such deliverance. That is sometimes to ask for miracles."

Fighting For Peace Bosnia 1994 written by Michael Rose and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

General Sir Michael Rose tells the inside story of one of the toughest challenges of his career, as Commander of the UN Protection Force in Bosnia in 1994. Amidst scenes of inhumanity not witnessed in Europe since the Second World War, he describes how he dealt with individuals who would stop at nothing, even the sacrifice of their own people, to fulfil their personal and political agendas. He sets the record straight on his handling of crises such as the sieges of Sarajevo, Gorazde and Bihac, and portrays the other hazards of his command: the often conflicting objectives of NATO and the UN, the political sensibilities of the troop-contributing nations, the historic loyalties and lobbies of the US administration and the manipulation of international opinion by the media.
