This is a story of the early years of Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band, which has kept up its presence in the top prize list since it was formed in 1972. Today, the band draws players from far and near, and it is educationally second to none in teaching youngsters the skills required to venture through the various grades in the Pipe Band world. When the band started, there was no money, no rich sponsor, hardly any kit, only plenty of enthusiasm and energy. The first years saw the meteoric climb to gain Grade One status, under the tutorship of Robert Martin and Tom Brown. The band still enjoys this status, but has not yet cracked the number one spot, although has came second on several occasions. This book is not the whole story, just a part of it. Look up the website Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band and read the up to date situation.

Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band was born in 1972 by a few enthusiasts. Educationally, today, it is second to none in teaching the skill and art of the pipes and drums, as the Novice and Juvenile sections of the band have testified by achieving their own trophies. These young people are the next generation of bandsmen and women, contributing to Scottish culture. The author of this book is a parent who became involved with the band when her son and daughter became playing members in those early days. Thiis story is part of our livng history. We can read of the achievements of Pop Stars, Soap Stars, Celebrities, Boy Bands, Girl Bands, Peers of the Realm, Royalty, Great Battles. The battle fought by those early volunteers, with no money, no equipment, no rich sponsor, their names forgotten, was won, and the story should be told. In the 21st century, Boghall and Bathgate are still an independent Pipe Band, all volunteers, who have to juggle their everyday lives with a commitment to the band. Visitors come to Scotland for pleasure, leisure, family gatherings, and also to enjoy the music provided by Pipe Bands. Long may it continue, I hope you enjoy the reading.

Duncan Williamson was the son, grandson and great grandson of nomadic tinsmiths, basket makers, pipers and storytellers. In this book, he describes his life as a traveller with verve, candour and intimacy, recounting a childhood spent on the shores of Loch Fyne, work on the small hill farms in the summer, walking with barrows and prams and later with horse and cart, the length and breadth of Scotland. He recalls camping with hundreds of traveller families from the 1940s to the 1960s, his marriage to his cousin, Jeanie Townsley, and all the various traditional skills and arts which must be perfected for a man to maintain his family adequately. The Horsieman is the story of traditions long vanished - of traveller trades, of building tents, of routes travelled and traditional camping sites, of stories, songs, music and cures which have been the heritage and tradition of travelling people in Scotland through the ages. Set mainly in Argyll, Tayside and all stations in between, Duncan Williamson's story is told with great warmth and humour and in the inimitable style of one Scotland's master storytellers.

Kit Marlowe: playwright, poet, lover. In the plague-stricken streets of Elizabethan England, Kit flirts with danger, leaving a trail of enemies and old flames in his wake. His plays are a roaring success; he seems destined for greatness. But the queen's eyes are everywhere and the air is laced with paranoia. When Marlowe is arrested on charges of treason, heresy and sodomy - all of which are punishable by death - he is released on bail with the help of Thomas Walsingham, a man he presumes to be his friend, but who has in fact hired the infamous assassin Robin Poley to take care of Marlowe, fearing his own sins may come to light. Now, with the queen's spies, the vengeful Baines, and the double-crossing Poley closing in, Marlowe's last friend in the world is Ingram Frizer, a total stranger who is obsessed with his plays, and who will, within ten days' time, become first Marlowe's lover, and then his killer. Richly atmospheric, emotionally devastating and heartrendingly imagined, Lightborne is a tender, thrilling tale of one of our most famous playwrights, and a love that flourishes within the margins.

When we think of Scottish literature we think first of the urban grit which came from Edinburgh and Glasgow or the rural poetry of the Highlands and Islands. No-one thinks of Falkirk. Who ever came out of Falkirk? The place may be on the map due to engineering innovations such as the Falkirk Wheel and the iconic Kelpies sculpture but the town’s contribution to our nation’s literature has so far been underlooked. Edited and introduced by author and playwright, Alan Bissett - originally from Hallglen in Falkirk - this collection features established writers from the area such as Aidan Moffat, the lyrical genius behind the band Arab Strap; Gordon Legge, who was key to the ‘Rebel Inc’ movement of the 1990s; Janet Paisley, one of Scotland’s leading Scots language voices; and Brian McCabe, arguably one of Scotland’s most accomplished short-story writers. Alongside them are a host of new and young talents, as well as unseen poetry unearthed from Falkirk Archives. Together, these voices create a compelling picture of Falkirk.
