The two different sets of equations derived by Tollmein and Goertler for the two-dimensional, compressible, free jet mixing layer using the similarity assumption have been programmed for the IBM 7044, and solutions to a wide variety of problems carried out. These solutions demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the method, illustrate the effects of changes in Prandtl number and other parameters, compare results of the Tollmein and Goertler methods, and provide analytical curves used for evaluating the spreading parameter. A new correlation for spreading parameter is presented. A first-order correction for afterburning, assuming complete stoichiometric combustion at a flame front, allows the method to be applied to fuel-rich rocket exhausts. Boundary layer temperature, velocity, and concentration profiles calculated from the Tollmein equations for a number of cold and hot air jets and for rocket engines under various conditions are presented. The most interesting feature of a rocket engine exhaust is the continued high mixing layer temperature as the altitude increases.

An analysis is presented to two-dimensional, isoenergetic, compressible mixing of a jet with a fluid at rest for both laminar and turbulent mixing. The analysis is primarily concerned with the development of theoretical expressions for the mixing similarity parameters. A general momentum equation is derived, which relates the similarity parameter to the mixing length and viscous shear stress. By using this general equation and Newton's viscous shear relation, a complete theoretical solution for the laminar mixing similarity parameter is derived, which does not involve a reference perturbation velocity factor. Prandtl's mixing length theory for the apparent viscous shear relation is used to obtain the theoretical similarity parameter for turbulent mixing. Based on these similarity parameters, equations for the width of the corresponding mixing regions are derived. These results and the approximate theoretical velocity profile equation developed by Pai, Nash, and Korst represent a closed-form theoretical approximation of the type of mixing considered. Velocity profiles at five axial stations in the half-jet mixing region of Mach 0.7, 0.85, 0.95, 1.49, and 1.96 free jets were measured. The nondimensional velocity distributions are similar, and correlate with the theory of Crane for incompressible flow. The half-jet spreading rate is essentially constsnt at subsonic speeds and decreases at supersonic speeds. The variation of jet spreading parameter with Mach number was determined from correlation of these and other data.
