To those of you who are already familiar with Turkish Poetry Today and to those of you who aren't, to those of you familiar with Turkish poets writing in the present and recent past and to those of you who are not, we bid a hearty welcome to the fourth issue of our journal, which we hope will continue to open doors for all its readers into Turkey's ever-evolving literary scene. As the new editors of TPT, one of the most significant changes we're making is the inclusion of a Featured Poet section that offers a comprehensive selection of a major Turkish poet's work. Our first featured poet, Behçet Necatigil (1916-1979), has long been recognized as a modern Turkish classic, and in this issue you'll encounter the broad range of work produced by this very prolific and versatile writer, comprising not only poems but two essays and an excerpt from his series of highly popular radio plays. We're grateful to the attendees of the 2015 Cunda International Workshop for Translators of Turkish Literature (tecca.boun.edu.tr), the focus of which was Behçet Necatigil's writings, for sharing their translations with us. Following the Featured Poet section you'll find a selection of poems that represent the various styles and forms of modern Turkish poetry produced in the last 120 years, including some very recently written work. While, happily enough, the last two or three decades have witnessed an unprecedented surge in the world-wide translation of Turkish poetry and fiction, and some poets of the present generation have been lucky enough to have their work translated and published internationally, Turkish authors haven't always been fortunate enough to be recognized through translations during their lifetime. This means that their work has to wait for 'just the right moment' as the years go by. Fortunately, steady progress is being made in bringing to light the work of highly gifted but woefully overlooked poets (such as that of Behçet Necatigil, Melih Cevdet Anday and others appearing in this journal) to the world outside their native country. We're proud to play a part in this crucial task. In the third section, devoted to essays and reviews, you'll encounter the review of a collection of poetry by another modern master, Gülten Akın (1933-2015). In a survey sponsored by by the Milliyet Arts Journal in 2008, Gülten Akın was voted 'the greatest living Turkish poet' by an outstanding majority of Turkish writers and critics. Two of her final poems are included in translation in this issue as well. Also, for those who wish to know more about the background of mid-20th century poetics in Turkey we're including an essay famously known in Turkish literary history as 'The Garip Manifesto' translated by Victoria Holbrook. This extremely important document was written in 1941 by Orhan Veli, who, with young fellow-poets Oktay Rifat and Melih Cevdet Anday, started the Garip (Strange) Movement, also known as the First New. A selection of poems by these three poets follows the manifesto, and in the poetry section just before it you'll find several poems by Melih Cevdet Anday translated by Sidney Wade and Efe Murad. While ideally we might have parallel English/Turkish texts for all contributions, with the expanded content of the journal we only have space for selected bilingual texts interspersed through the first two sections. This will provide an opportunity for readers who are proficient in both English and Turkish to see how the language used by Turkish poets has changed over the decades, and it will show the strategies employed by translators faced with certain problems they encounter vis-à-vis Turkish grammar and colloquial usages.

Orhan Veli Kan k (1914--1950), more commonly known as Orhan Veli, was a pioneering Turkish poet and one of the founding members of the Garip (Strange) movement. His innovative poetics wore a unique signature of austerity and accessibility. With arresting insight and playful irreverence Veli's poems transformed the Turkish literary world. When he died at the age of 36, he was acknowledged as one of the most important Turkish writers of his generation. Now, at last, this edition of The Complete Poems makes the full breadth of his achievement available in English for the first time. It brings together poems from the five collections published during the author's lifetime, as well as uncollected material from newspapers and magazines, and poems only published posthumously. The Complete Poems includes an informative introduction, endnotes, and chronology, placing the poems in their historical context and touching on many of the themes which shaped Orhan Veli's distinctive voice. Essays covering a broad range of genres and ranging from the late Ottoman era to contemporary literature open the debate on the place of Turkish literature in the globalized literary world. Explorations of the multilingual cosmopolitanism of the Ottoman literary scene are complemented by examples of cross-generational intertextual encounters. The renowned poet Nâzim Hikmet is studied from a variety of angles, while contemporary and popular writers such as Orhan Pamuk and Elif Safak are contextualized. Turkish Literature as World Literature not only fills a significant lacuna in world literary studies but also draws a composite historical, political, and cultural portrait of Turkey in its relations with the broader world.

The book combines chapters on broad topics like propaganda state formation, town and nation, and minorities at war, with more specific case studies in order to deepen our understanding of how processes of national identification supported the cultures of total war in Europe. This transnational volume also reveals and develops a range of insightful connections between the themes it covers, as well as between different groups within Europe and different countries and regions, including Western and Eastern Europe, the Ottoman Empire and colonial territories. It is a vital study for all students and scholars of the First World War.

This Handbook provides a comprehensive overview of Turkish literature within both a local and global context. Across eight thematic sections a collection of subject experts use close readings of literature materials to provide a critical survey of the main issues and topics within the literature. The chapters provide analysis on a wide range of genres and text types, including novels, poetry, religious texts, and drama, with works studied ranging from the fourteenth century right up to the present day. Using such a historic scope allows the volume to be read across cultures and time, while simultaneously contextualizing and investigating how modern Turkish literature interacts with world literature, and finds its place within it. Collectively, the authors challenge the national literary historiography by replacing the Ottoman Turkish literature in the Anatolian civilizations with its plurality of cultures. They also seek to overcome the institutional and theoretical shortcomings within current study of such works, suggesting new approaches and methods for the study of Turkish literature. The Routledge Handbook on Turkish Literature marks a new departure in the reading and studying of Turkish literature. It will be a vital resource for those studying literature, Middle East studies, Turkish and Ottoman history, social sciences, and political science.

Poetry. Middle Eastern Studies. IO'S SONG is poem, energy field, myth, and autobiographical essay. It is "signatures' colors." As the author states near the end of the work, Myth is not a narrative applied, but dis-covered. The narrative that emanates against our will revealing ITSELF, A VIOLENT LIGHT that descends and leaves. Every myth is an arrival and escape, departure which in truth is death. This is due to the nature of words, their will to metamorphoze themselves from meaning to meaning, AS BEEING, crossing boundaries across human will, human reason or human culture, seeing ourselves thru the mirror of language as a reflection, willess, bobbing on the alien surface (facade) of words, ceding to insanity to plumb its depths.

The twenty two essays collected in Turkish Language, Literature and History offer insights into Turkish culture in the widest sense. Written by leaders in their fields from North America, Europe and Turkey, these essays cover a broad range of topics, focusing on various aspects of Turkish language, literature and history between the eighth century and the present. The chapters move between ancient and contemporary literature, exploring Sultan Selim’s interest in dream interpretation, translating newly uncovered poetry and exploring the works of Orhan Pamuk. Linguistic complexities of the Turkish language and dialects are analysed, while new translations of 16th century decrees offer insight into Ottoman justice and power. This is a festschrift volume published for the leading scholar Bob Dankoff, and the diverse topics covered in these essays reflect Dankoff’s valuable contributions to the study of Turkish language and literature. This cross-disciplinary book offers contributions from academics specialising in linguistics, history, literature and sociology, amongst others. As such, it is of key interest to scholars working in a variety of disciplines, with a focus on Turkish Studies.
