Per lungo tempo, la storia dell’omosessualità si è risolta nel racconto spettacolare delle vicende biografiche di individui eccezionali – Oscar Wilde, Leonardo, Caravaggio –, certamente famosi per i propri amori, ma tutt’oggi ricordati per gli scandali di cui si resero protagonisti, le controversie non ancora sopite che li riguardano o i loro contributi all’arte, alla scienza, al pensiero. Al contrario, la quotidianità del vivere omosessuale nel corso dei secoli è stata di frequente relegata sullo sfondo della storia del costume, quando non scopertamente ignorata dagli studiosi, più interessati all’eccezione che alla regola. A colmare questa vistosa lacuna interviene Tutta un’altra storia, in cui lo storico e militante Giovanni Dall’Orto raccoglie il frutto di anni di ricerca, disegnando una traiettoria che dalla classicità grecoromana arriva – attraversando gli snodi imprescindibili della nascita della cristianità, del colonialismo e dell’età vittoriana – all’Europa dei totalitarismi: frammenti lirici, lettere private, appunti diaristici, atti processuali, molti dei quali mai pubblicati prima in Italia, vanno a comporre un mosaico immane, tanto eterogeneo nei luoghi e nei tempi quanto coerente nei temi che lo percorrono, restituendo infine voce a chi, per secoli, non l’ha avuta. Con uno stile capace di unire al rigore storiografico il gusto caustico per l’invettiva, Giovanni Dall’Orto affronta scandali e repressioni, riti e consuetudini che hanno accompagnato l’omosessualità occidentale nel suo divenire storico, e in questi corsi e ricorsi trova le ragioni profonde delle divisioni di oggi, delle battaglie, delle conquiste. Nella certezza che soltanto dalla comprensione di ciò che è stato si producono consapevolezza critica e senso di responsabilità – i frutti più maturi della conoscenza storica che, soli, possono nutrire il domani. La tesi di fondo dell'autore è che occorra un nuovo paradigma di pensiero e azione: la società è fondamento dell'economia e non viceversa, come invece la cultura prevalente tende ad affermare da ormai quarant'anni. L'erosione del capitale sociale porta con sé quella del capitale economico, mentre per uscire dalla crisi bisogna far leva sul primo. La finanziarizzazione dell'economia ha spostato l'attenzione sui mercati finanziari a discapito dell'economia reale: le regole nei due campi sono per profondamente diverse. Un liberismo senza etica fa vincere il più forte e crea una società di disuguali. Negli Stati Uniti, dove il modello dominante è l'oligarchia, ci si è sempre più allontanati dalla cultura europea, legata alla sussidiarietà. Non è un caso che la società americana sia vicina al collasso. Bisogna riportare l'omo al ruolo di soggetto e non di oggetto, e riscoprire che il vero motore della storia è la sua natura emozionale.

Cursed Blessings explores the relationship between sexual nonconformity and religious radical dissent in the early modern Western European world. While many studies have been devoted to the process of the "hereticalization" of nonnormative sexual practices and its use in anti-heretical propaganda, this book is entirely devoted to understanding the meaning of unconventional sexual behaviors from the perspective of the dissenters. Divided into three parts, the first focuses on the Italian peninsula and explores alternative views on sexuality inspired by Renaissance currents of anti-clericalism, ancient Christian heresies, traditions of apocrypha of the New Testament, and Rabbinic literature. It also examines how embodied and gendered experiences influenced the dissenting views of religious women. The second part explores how reflections on Original Sin led to the questioning of Christian assumptions regarding sex and gender, highlighting the relationship between the criticism of sexual morality and disputes on free will, spirituality, and redemption. The third part examines how most of these threads were entwined into a more coherent philosophical framework in the writings of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century erudite libertines. This book is designed for academic readers, including graduate and undergraduate students. Given its intersectional approach, it will be of interest to researchers, teachers, and students in a wide array of fields, including religious, gender, and sexuality studies, as well as literature. This book also tackles issues that are relevant to present-day debates, such as the problematic relations between sexuality and religion and the ongoing polemics surrounding the complicated interactions between religion and politics.

This open access book investigates the pathologisation of homosexuality during the fascist regime in Italy through an analysis of the case of G., a man with "homosexual tendencies" interned in the Collegno mental health hospital in 1928. No systematic study exists on the possibility that Fascism used internment in an asylum as a tool of repression for LGBT people, as an alternative to confinement on an island, prison or home arrests. This research offers evidence that in some cases it did. The book highlights how the dictatorship operated in a low-key, shadowy and undetectable manner, bending pre-existing legislation. Its brutality was - and still is - difficult to prove. It also emphasises the ways in which existing stereotypes on homosexuality were reinforced by the regime propaganda in support of its so-called moralising campaign and how families, the police and the medical professionals joined forces in implementing this form of repression.

Homosexuality, bisexuality, transvestitism, and trans-genders represented new ideas, customs, and mentalities which shattered nineteenth-century Italy. At this time, Italy was a state in the making, with a growing population, a fading aristocracy, and new urban classes entering the scene. While still an extremely Catholic country, atheism and secularization slowly undermined the old, traditional morality, with literature and poetry endorsing innovative fashions coming from abroad. Laxity mixed with perversion, while new forms of sexuality mirrored the immense changes taking place in a society that, since time immemorial, was dominated by the Church and by a rigid class system. This was a revolution, parallel to the political movements that brought about the Unification of Italy in 1861, and was tormented, intense, and occasionally tragic. This collection of essays offers a rather comprehensive overview of this phenomenon. Personalities and places, ideas and novels, poetry and tragedy, law and customs, are the subject of ten essays, written by leading international experts in Italian history, the history of sexuality, literature and poetry. The Italian nineteenth century is a time of a number of rapid changes, visible and invisible revolutions, often given less attention than the unification process.
