Lontar Tutur Parakriya menguraikan tentang percakapan antara Bhatara Iswara (Siwa) kepada Bhatara Kumara. Diawali permintaan dari Bhatari Uma agar Sang Hyang Kumara berkenan menanyakan kepada Bhatara Iswara tentang ajaran yang mengantarkan sesorang menuju moksa. Selanjutnya Bhatara Kumara bertanya mengenai asal mula kejadian yang dinyatakan bahwa segala sesuatu yang ada berasal dari Tuhan Yang Maha Esa yang diistilahkan dengan niskala. Dari keadaan niskala kemudian timbul sesuatu yang berwujud namun tanpa ukuran sehingga disebut matra. Dari matra tersebut kemudian menyusul berturut-turut nada, bindu dan ardhacandra yang kemudian menimbulkan pusat keadaan yang disebut dengan wiswa. Penelitian yang dilakukan oleh penulis buku ini mengungkap ajaran-ajaran moral dan etika kehinduan dalam teks Tutur Parakriya. Meskipun teks ini dibuat pada awal abad kedua puluh, tampaknya ada referensi dari sumber-sumber yang lebih tua. Meskipun demikian, ajaran etika dasar dalam teks Tutur Parakriya adalah langkah awal menuju keinsafan diri.

The oldest and most extensive written language of Southeast Asia is Old Javanese, or Kawi. It is the oldest language in terms of written records, and the most extensive in the number and variety of its texts. Javanese literature has taken many forms. At various times, prose stories, sung poetry or other metrical types, chronicles, scientific, legal, and philosophical treatises, prayers, chants, songs, and folklore were all written down. Yet relatively few texts are available in English. The unstudied texts remaining are an unexplored record of Javanese culture as well as a language still alive as a literary medium in Bali. Introduction to Old Javanese Language and Literature represents a first step toward remedying the dearth of Old Javanese texts available to English-speaking students. The ideal teaching companion, this anthology offers transliterated original texts with facing-page English translations. Theanthology focuses on prose selections, since their straightforward style and syntax offer the beginning student the most rewarding experience. Four sections make up the collection. Part I offers several short readings as the most accessible entry point into Old Javanese. Part II contains two moralistic fables from an Old Javanese retelling of the Hindu Pañcatantra cycle. This book is the first comprehensive study of the practice of kekawin composition in Bali. Based on field research and a diverse range of palm leaf texts, it explores Balinese perceptions of kekawin composition and demonstrates the nexus between religion and the writing of these poems. Like kekawin from ancient Java, Balinese kekawin have been conceived as a mystical means of unification with divinity, as temples of language. In the first part of the book Bali is shown to be a society of religious literacy, and alphabet magic and the religious beliefs that underpin literary activity are examined. The second part explores Balinese conceptions of the practice of kekawin composition as literary yoga. Both the priestly identity of poets and the act of composing as a religious ritual are considered. The final section investigates the craft of composition through texts that concern prosody, poetics and orthography: the Canda, the Bhasaprana and the Swarawyanjana.
