The book traces individuals' adaptive interventions in the cultural sphere. More specifically, it investigates the purposes of dramatic adapting, which is basically regarded as a political activity. Following the intense micropolitical combat of an author with the precursor Shakespeare, adaptation becomes comprehensible as part of the ceaseless motions of macrocultural change. At each adaptation's centre, an individual subject's identity act encounters external discourses, and these transform each other and destabilise ideologies. Moreover, they lay siege to the cultural powerhouse Shakespeare. The book thus explores adapters' revolt against the loop of eternal repetition, which is created by canonic forces. In order to do so, the author uses an innovative combination of standard theories.

Arguing that many of these adaptations attempt to 'improve' or 'correct' the play's perceived political or aesthetic flaws, Carroll traces how Macbeth's popularity and adaptability stems from several of its formal features: its openly political nature; its inclusion of supernatural elements; its parable of the dangers of ambition; its violence; its brevity; and its domestic focus on a husband and wife. The study ranges across elite and popular culture divides: from Sir William Davenant's adaptation for the Restoration stage (1663–4), an early 18th-century novel, The Secret History of Mackbeth and Verdi's Macbeth, through to 20th- and 21st-century adaptations for stage and screen, as well as contemporary novelizations, young adult literature and commercial appropriations that testify to the play's absorption into contemporary culture.

That is also the reason for so many films being based on Shakespeare's tragedies and comedies. The most successful period of making movies on Shakespearean dramas in history was the twentieth century. Very well-known and talented directors of the time challenged each other in making Shakespearean movies. Most successful for example were Sven Gade with his silent movie of Hamlet, Franco Zefferelli using Mel Gibson's talent also in Hamlet, as well as Kenneth Brannagh and many others. However the most famous films are the Shakespeare adaptations of Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles. Both had a lot of talent in being director, main actor and producer in one person in most of their productions. Because of their very interesting version and vision of Shakespeare, the Hamlet adaptation by Laurence Oliver and the Macbeth adaptation by Orson Welles will be the subject of this paper. The first topic in the first chapter of this assignment will be Laurence Olivier with his adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet. There will be a discussion on the concept of his film in general, which includes Olivier's vision of the setting, the time the film takes place in and the cutting of original scenes in Shakespeare. The centre of this paper will be the discussion of the interior and exterior elements of the film, influencing each other contrastively. The third chapter will discuss Orson Welles's adaptation of Macbeth. Similar to the previous chapter, the concept and the background of the film will be examined and hence the special methods of Welles to express the interior and exterior elements of his movie will be discusse

Adaptation Before Cinema highlights a range of pre-cinematic media forms, including theater, novelization, painting and illustration, transmedia art, children’s media, and other literary and visual culture. The book expands the primary scholarly audience of adaptation studies from film and media scholars to literary scholars and cultural critics working across a range of historical periods, genres, forms, and media. In doing so, it underscores the creative diversity of cultural adaptation practiced before cinema came to dominate the critical conversation on adaptation. Collectively, the chapters construct critical bridges between literary history and contemporary media studies, foregrounding diverse practices of adaptation and providing a platform for innovative critical approaches to adaptation, appropriation, or transmedia storytelling popular from the Middle Ages through the invention of cinema.
