An anthology of the best tales of ghosts and terror Tales of ghosts and horror can be found in every age, country and culture on earth; they have been passed down orally for millennia and in written form have existed for almost as long as literature itself. Although there have been notable novels of spine chilling hauntings there can be little doubt that the ghost story is a form ideally suited to short stories or novellas. The story that frightens can be explicitly so, with screaming phantoms, a morality tale or humorous, it can be subtly menacing with creeping horror, and can be set almost anywhere. Such stories have never waned in their popularity with the reading public and it is for this reason that so many authors have applied their talents to creating them. Essentially we love to be thrilled and chilled simultaneously. Some of the finest exponents of the ghost story have been specialists who became masters of the genre, while others wrote scary stories to the same high standard as all their work. In the middle of the 19th century the appetite for tales of terror burgeoned and a golden age was born that lasted until the outbreak of Great War. It is probably fair to say that the finest works of the genre were created during this period and it is principally from those that the twenty-seven stories in this substantial anthology have been drawn. This bumper collection of some of the best stories of the ghostly and horrific has been gathered together by Eunice Hetherington. Included in 'The First Leonaur Book of Great Ghost and Horror Stories' are 'The Were-Wolf' by H.B. Marryat, 'The Withered Arm' by Thomas Hardy, ' 'Clarimonde' by Theophile Gautier, 'The Rival Ghosts' by Brander Mathew, 'The Silent Woman' by Leopold Kompert and many more wonderful tales of the macabre. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Twenty-Five Ghost Stories BY W. BOB HOLLAND This collection of ghost stories owes its publication to an interest that I have long felt in the supernatural and in works of the imagination. As a child I was deeply concerned in tales of spooks, haunted houses, wraiths and specters and stories of weird experiences, clanking chains, ghostly sights and gruesome sounds always held me spellbound and breathless. Experiences in editorial offices taught me that I was not alone in liking stories of mystery. The desire to know something of that existence that is veiled by Death is equally potent in old age and in youth, and men, women and children like to be thrilled and to have a “creepy” feeling along the spinal column as the result of reading of a visitor from beyond the grave. This volume contains the most famous of the weird stories of Edgar Allan Poe, that master of this form of literature. “The Black Cat” contains all the needed element of mystery and supernatural, and yet the feline acts in a natural manner all of the time, and the story is quite possibly true. It is only in the manner of its{6} telling that the tale becomes one that fittingly finds its place in this collection. Guy de Maupassant, the clever Frenchman, is also represented by two effective bits of work, and other less widely known writers have also contributed stories that are worth reading, and when once read will be remembered. There is not a story among the twenty-five that is not worthy of close reading. There has recently been a revival in interest in ghost stories. Many of the high-class magazines have within a few months printed stories with supernatural incidents, and writers whose names are known to all who read have turned their attention to this form of literature. Whether or not the reader believe in ghosts, he cannot fail to be interested in this little book. Without venturing to express a positive opinion either way, I will only say with Hamlet: “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” Twenty-Five Ghost Stories BY W. BOB HOLLAND

The Second Leonaur Christmas Book Of Great Ghost Stories written by Eunice Hetherington and has been published by Leonaur Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-21 with Fiction categories.

A second deliciously creepy selection of ghost stories for midwinter nights During the Christmas season, when the nights are long and the worst weather that winter offers is kept safely outside, it has long been a tradition that in the evenings stories of ghosts and hauntings are read aloud to the accompaniment of the crackling flames of a real fire. Christmas is a time for gifts and what better gift could there be than a book of creepy, fireside tales by the finest exponents of the craft? Ghost stories can, of course, be read at any time of year and the key to reader satisfaction is that an anthology should contain only excellent stories. For the two volumes in this series, Eunice Hetherington has drawn on the opinions of many knowledgeable experts, from the Golden Age of the genre, on the subject of 'the best ghost stories'. Of course, the tales they recommended included old favourites as well as the much less familiar, but the one thing the stories have in common is that their authors all write well and tell an enthralling story. Every expert had their personal favourites, and the editor has used her own knowledge of the genre to compile two substantial volumes of what we hope readers will agree are very fine ghost stories indeed. Draw the curtains tight, don't look over your shoulder and enjoy! This second volume contains twenty-two classic tales including 'John Charrington's 'Wedding', 'The Ghost at the Rath', 'The Shadow of a Shade', 'The Old Nurse's Story', 'The Botathen Ghost' and many others. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Twenty highly recommended creepy tales selected by critics of the genre Anthologies of ghost stories are perennially popular. Sometimes the raison d'etre for a collection might be that the stories embrace a particular theme or that the fame or authority of the compiler imbues a special appeal or credibility. However, it occurred to the Leonaur editors that the principal concern of anyone buying such an anthology must surely be that the stories included will be of the highest order as examples of originally plotted fine writing, guaranteed to deliver the required thrills and chills. In consideration of how that outcome might best be achieved and offered to readers we decided to research as many lists of 'the best ghost stories' as we could find, compiled by critics, informed journalists and authorities of supernatural fiction, to determine which stories those people--based on as much consensus as possible--believed were, indeed, the finest ghostly tales written during the 'golden age' of the genre. Sometimes their lists included well-known stories that would be familiar to most ghost story enthusiasts, so these were removed from consideration. What remained were 42 stories which had received deservedly high praise and these we have divided between two Leonaur volumes. These collections are also available as Leonaur 'Christmas Books' since they make ideal gifts, but are here offered in the familiar Leonaur 'Supernatural and Weird Fiction' cover for both a general readership and series collectors. In volume one can be found 'Thurnley Abbey' by Perceval Landon, 'The Festival' by H. P. Lovecraft, 'The Spectre Bride' by William Harrison Ainsworth, 'The Last House in C-Street' by Dinah Mulock and sixteen other creepy tales. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands. IMPORTANT: THE CONTENTS OF THIS BOOK ARE INDENTICAL TO THE SECOND LEONAUR CHRISTMAS BOOK OF GREAT GHOST STORIES.
