Purpose. Subjective refraction procedures using a Jackson Cross Cylinder and blur interpretation are well established, but other less known and rarely used methods exist. Our purpose was to assess two alternate methods for possible advantages relative to traditional subjective refraction. Methods. Method1 used a simple stenopaic slit to find the major meridians and then a Scheiner’s disc to measure their refractive powers. Method2 used a modified Scheiner’s disc overlaid with Fresnel prisms to measure power in each meridian. Both methods measured separate samples of 20 eyes, and their results were compared to standard subjective refractions. We evaluated agreement with standard refraction as well as visual acuity and utility of each method. Results. The mean power difference (power vector magnitude) between Method1 and subjective refraction was 0.39 D. Mean axis difference was 2.3°. Average visual acuity was not significantly different. The corresponding results for Method2 were 1.65 D, 9.2° and visual acuity was 0.27 logMAR (approximately 3 lines) worse. Conclusions. Results for Method1 indicated close agreement with standard subjective refraction, but was harder for some subjects to understand. It could be a viable alternative when standard refraction is unreliable. Method2 showed poor agreement and significantly worse visual acuity. In its current stage of development, it is not a viable alternative to standard subjective refraction.

Retinoscopy is an eye exam that determines the refractive error of the eye (long sighted, short sighted, astigmatism). A refraction test indicates the strength of the prescription needed for glasses or contact lenses. The new edition of this book provides a concise overview of clinical refraction. Presented in an easy to read format, it is divided into two main sections. The first part explains basic clinical procedures for routine refraction, beginning with an introduction to instruments and the procedure, followed by aspects of the test for different disorders including myopia (short sightedness), astigmatism, keratoconus and refraction in children. Section two provides in depth discussion on retinoscopy and correct use of the retinoscope. The second edition has been fully revised and updated to explain the latest advances in the field, and is further enhanced by clinical images and figures. Key points Practical guide to clinical refraction and retinoscopy Fully revised and updated second edition Explains basic procedures and instruments for refraction test and refraction in different ophthalmic disorders Previous edition (9789351520634) published in 2014
