This volume presents 22 tales from the Trobriand Islands told by children (boys between the age of 5 and 9 years) and adults. The monograph is motivated not only by the anthropological linguistic aim to present a broad and quite unique collection of tales with the thematic approach to illustrate which topics and themes constitute the content of the stories, but also by the psycholinguistic and textlinguistic questions of how children acquire linearization and other narrative strategies, how they develop them and how they use them to structure these texts in an adult-like way. The tales are presented in morpheme-interlinear transcriptions with first textlinguistic analyses and cultural background information necessary to fully understand them. A summarizing comparative analysis of the texts from a psycholinguistic, anthropological linguistic and philological point of view discusses the underlying schemata of the stories, the means narrators use to structure them, their structural complexity and their cultural specificity.

Joe "Duff" McBride's new book, A Tale of Two Gimps: "Such Is Life," tells the eye-opening and, at times, sidesplitting story of his misadventures as a self-titled "gimp"--the result of a car accident as a teenage boy that left him physically disabled, but with his sense of humor fully intact. His witty perspective on life, especially the difficulties of his new situation, is shared and even amplified by his friendship with "Mouse," another teenage boy who finds himself in a similar predicament. When the two teens become acquainted at a rehabilitation hospital in Philadelphia, they are both also becoming acquainted with the tremendous challenges forced upon them by their spinal cord injuries. These problems are more than just the physical handicaps, but the emotional and psychological ones as well, as the two boys manage to keep the spirits of others high as well as their own, at the same time they struggle daily with the kinds of basic activities that most people take for granted. Even thought the book is intended to entertain the reader with unblinking honesty and biting humor, it also presents a remarkable account of two young men doing the best they can. A Tale of Two Gimps is a unique work, offering a glimpse into a world many can't imagine. It is sad, touching, hilarious, filled with hope, disgusting, shocking, crude and raw. Just like life. It shows how, for these two indomitable young men, 'it was the worst of circumstances, and it was the best of circumstances.'

Swallows And Armenians written by Karen Babayan and has been published by Wild Pansy Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-09 with Fiction categories.

The fictional Walker children, are much loved characters in Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons, a quintessentially English family in an archetypal English children's classic. However, it was an Anglo-Armenian family from Aleppo who were the catalyst and inspiration. Swallows and Armenians is a book of short stories and essays which firmly re-establishes the connection, using newly-appraised correspondence and diaries. 'With her beautifully researched complement to Arthur Ransome’s classic and still best-selling series, Karen Babayan has opened a much-loved children’s adventure epic, set in the iconically British Lake District, to an enriching cross-cultural re-worlding. By revealing the Anglo-Armenian identity of the children who inspired the gripping tale of sailing, piracy and intrigue, she has created new stories resonant in our own times of conflict, displacement, and dangerous nationalisms. Unveiling Ransome’s anglicization of the Altounyan children, Karen Babayan restores them to their central place in British literature. She also links their crossing of Syrian Aleppo and Armenian cuisine with a once-Viking Cumbria to her own bi-cultural identity and traumatic familial experience of displacement and migration, loss and adaptation, all shadowed by the terror of the Armenian genocide (1915-17). By creative storytelling, Swallows and Armenians intervenes as much in diasporic Armenian as British cultural memory by vibrantly reanimating the voices of these extraordinary children who speak back across her pages from a past she has recreated to a present that needs them now.' Professor Griselda Pollock, Laureate of the Holberg Prize for Arts and Humanities 2020
