Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, Note: 2,0, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Maybe two of the greatest poets in Great Britain of the second half of the 20 th century were Philip Larkin and Ted Hughes. Both of them were influenced by the First and Second World War. Their whole youth was influenced whether by the situation of people after the First and Second World War or by its consequences. While Philip Larkins ́ father admired Hitler and by this influenced the view of the world of his son, Hughes father never wanted to talk about his memories of his service in the First World War. And both poets were disappointed in some way by the modern world. Hughes was shocked by the rough environment in which he grew up because he loved nature. He was also marked by the way people thought during the Great Depression. That ́s one reason why Hughes in his later work wrote about nature and the place of men in the universal scheme like in the poem “Wodwo” about which I ́m going to talk. Other main themes of his work were the fight between the hunter and the hunted or the human and the divine 1 . Philip Larkin was definitely one of the greatest poets of his time. He was the leading figure of “The Movement”, a group of poets that addressed everyday life in Britain in “plain, straightforward language”; their “rational approach was anti-romantic and sardonic” 2 . Larkin never wrote about great feelings and always avoided great words. He, like Hughes, wrote in plain and easy style. Larkin never really liked modern things because he thought that the modern way, especially modern art That ́s why he was also a feared critic. In his poem “Going,Going”, which I ́m going to talk about he also doomes the way men handle nature today and where this will all end. After I have been talking about the two poems “Going,Going” by Philip Larkin and “Wodwo” by Ted Hughes I want to show that the two poems comply with the essay “The Pleasure Principle” by Philip Larkin. In this essay Larkin makes clear what he thinks is a good poem, especially today when literature is changing so dramatically in his eyes. [...]

Byron was a man of many passions, always fiercely held and defended, but his intense devotion to the poetry of Alexander Pope seemed to characterise a man standing a little to the left of the Romantic universe. While Pope largely left a taste of dust in the mouths of the Romantics, Byron continued to defend the “little Queen Anne’s man” in letters and in print as if he were arguing for the reputation of a lover; so much so that we are left to wonder, what kind of impression did the greatest poet of the eighteenth century leave upon the work of the seminal poet of the nineteenth? How far and in what way did Byron’s adoration of Pope imprint itself upon his own poetry in conscious and unconscious echoes, in parallels of thought and expression, in the unexpected, unlooked-for congruence? This book identifies and lays out the most significant strands of that influence, following them wherever they lead. Through exploring both poets’ satirical portraits of men and women, their expression of love and forbidden passion, their various poetic techniques, the influence of the Roman poet Horace, and the dual resonance of Eden and paradise in their work, a picture emerges of Pope touching the deepest recesses of Byron’s poetic thought. Amongst the particular themes discussed here are the presence of women in the lives and poetry of both men, the disentangling of the sense of alienation and exile exhibited in their authorial psyches, the significance of the doppelgänger for their satire, and a weighing of the deep contrapuntal nature of Byron’s thought, contrasting it with Pope’s. Byron and the Best of Poets is the first major study of its kind to explore these multiple aspects and to unpack them in the work of both poets.

Included in the Introduction are chapters on his Life & Work, The Qasida in Arabic, Previous Qasidas by Master Arab Poets that would have influenced him and one who he influenced, The Perfect Master (Qutub), and the Wine Poem and The Mystic's Way. Selected Bibliography. AHMED SHAWQI (1869 - 1932) was the great Arabic Poet-Laureate; an Egyptian poet and dramatist who pioneered the modern Egyptian literary movement, most notably introducing the genre of poetic epics to the Arabic literary tradition. In 1927 he was crowned by his peers the 'Prince of Poets' in recognition of his considerable contributions to the literary field. Shawqi's work can be categorized into three main periods during his career: The first coincides with the period during which he occupied a position at the court of the Khedive (Viceroy), consisting of eulogies to the Khedive: praising him or supporting his policy. The second comprised the period of his exile in Spain. During this period his feeling of nostalgia and sense of alienation directed his poetic talent to patriotic poems on Egypt as well as the Arab world. The third stage occurred after his return from exile: during that period he became preoccupied with the history of Ancient Egypt and Islam. He wrote his famous Sufi poem, in praise of the Prophet Muhammad (here fully translated in qasida form). The maturation of his poetic style was reflected in his plays (including his Majnun-Layla). Includeed are remarkable poems for children and others in the correct forms. Introduction on his Life & Times & poems & his Museum. Large Format Paperback 7" x 10" 369 pages.
