Courtney Wesley and her lover, Dr. Josh Ledbetter, are working as medical missionaries in the Congo when Ledbetter falls victim to a mysterious and violent disease. They return home, and medical specialists in America are initially stumped. Doctors are then shocked to discover Ledbetter suffers from a new form of a devastating disease previously known to afflict only the cannibalistic people of Papua New Guinea. In order to avoid a Federal Isolation Order, Ledbetter flees, and Courtney vows to heal her lover and save his life -- but is she already too late? His strange illness manifests itself in violent ways. Ledbetter's mind and body are both affected as he develops the unquenchable hunger for human flesh. He becomes a walking zombie, his murderous rampage infecting others with the disease from Dallas to the French Quarter of New Orleans. Courtney is on his tail, but so are the authorities who want him dead. Driven by concern, she returns to Africa with her father, where they set out to find a cure for Ledbetter's mysterious disease. There, she makes the acquaintance of a witchdoctor by the name of L'ombo. He is the keeper of ancient secrets and holds the key to healing Dr. Ledbetter. They must work together before the disease spreads further and America is infested with mindless cannibals.

Preacherman is a worthy successor and prequel to Davis Temple's award-winning Two Letters Then Booger Den, where we first meet the evil Reverend Longley. This book, the story of Charles Longley, has been compared to Sinclair Lewis' Elmer Gantry. However, while Gantry was a grotesquely vulgar character, the Preacherman reader will find Longley a sympathetic character as he struggles with the forces of good and evil that tear his life asunder. Through it all, Charles struggles to escape grinding poverty, gain an education, and become a great preacher. His search for love is a compulsion that drives him down torturous roads. People close to Charles, especially the women he loves, die, sometimes terribly, sometimes mysteriously. Though Charles struggles to become a man of God, the forces of evil prevail. He becomes a "comically tragic" figure without thought for others and allows himself to be caught up, however unwillingly, in a classic pact with the Devil, who, at times, speaks to him in the form of his dead father. Readers are challenged to decide whether the evil side of Charles Longley is a product of inherited genes, possession by the Devil, mental illness, or all three. A surprising "twist" in the Epilogue may provide a clue. The author's skill with Southern dialogue and abundant humorous circumstances provide a balance for the darker elements of Preacherman.

The violent history of colonialism has plagued the American psyche for centuries. Some ghosts, however, are never laid to rest. When the Pequot Indians, exterminated by the white man in 1637, return to modern-day Connecticut to exact revenge upon the white man and his former allies, the Mohegan Indians, a violent supernatural confrontation erupts. A beautiful summer's day in the small village of Moodus is suddenly disrupted when a local man is discovered not only dead, but scalped; two others have been killed by arrows—all with white whales painted on their foreheads. Meanwhile, Sarah Gates and Rob Chapman, precocious teenagers with an eye for mischief, are searching for caves on Cave Mountain when they see something incredulous: a tall Indian carrying a tomahawk and bow and arrow. His face is covered in war paint and his eyes look dead below his Mohawk. Thinking no one will believe them, the youths decide to investigate on their own. But they soon find themselves involved in a war and moral travesty that stretches well beyond the limits of their experience or imagination. Moodus Noises is a fast-paced, compelling work of fantasy that questions modern reality and is also a poignant critical commentary on our nation, its history, and the repercussions of what it means to be both an American and a human being.

The New York Times bestselling true story of an all-American girl and a boy from Zimbabwe and the letter that changed both of their lives forever. It started as an assignment... Everyone in Caitlin's class wrote to an unknown student somewhere in a distant place. Martin was lucky to even receive a pen-pal letter. There were only ten letters, and fifty kids in his class. But he was the top student, so he got the first one. That letter was the beginning of a correspondence that spanned six years and changed two lives. In this compelling dual memoir, Caitlin and Martin recount how they became best friends—and better people—through their long-distance exchange. Their story will inspire you to look beyond your own life and wonder about the world at large and your place in it.
