A collection of two Ottoman Turkish treatises discussing gardening and the cultivation of flowers, probably copied during the 18th century and bound together in a single volume. Text is in black (and occasional red) riqāʻ; 15 lines within red (and occasional gilt) rules. It is not clear if both texts are the work of the same copyist. At the very beginning of the volume is a table in which the movements of the stars are related to the seasons. The lengthier first text is an untitled and undated horticultural treatise in which the unidentified author recounts how he set up a garden in Edirne, cleared the area, planted fruit and flowers, and settled there. This garden soon became famous for resembling paradise itself. The final section offers instructions for the long-term preservation of pears, apples and lemons, recommending methods such as sun-drying, wrapping in leaves, and storing fruit in bottles. This work may be a version of the Revnak-ı Bostan (or Revnak-ı Bustan) of Sahibülreis Elhac İbrahim İbnülhac Mehmed, described as the "oldest surviving Ottoman work of the subject of gardening and agriculture" thought to be composed originally in 1654 (Atasoy, page 349). The second, shorter work contained in the volume is "Risale-i Şükufename," a brief treatise on floriculture credited to "Abdullah Efendi bin Galatavi Ruznamçeci Mahmud Efendi," divided into 13 chapters and written at the commission of "His Excellency Mustafa Pasha"; "1190" (i.e., 1776) is said to appear in the text (which, if accurate, more likely is a date the manuscript copy was created since the ostensible patron, Kara Mustafa Paşa, was Grand vizier from 1676-1683). It offers a discussion of the daffodil (chapter 1) and the different types of soil necessary for growing flowers (chapter 2), as well as detailed information on the various kinds of tulips; the Istanbul trade in flower seeds among flower lovers; and the spread of beautiful flowers to the city.

The Ottoman Empire was one of the largest and longest-lasting empires in history—and one of the most culinarily inclined. In this powerful and complex concoction of politics, culture, and cuisine, the production and consumption of food reflected the lives of the empire’s citizens from sultans to soldiers. Food bound people of different classes and backgrounds together, defining identity and serving symbolic functions in the social, religious, political, and military spheres. In Bountiful Empire, Priscilla Mary Işın examines the changing meanings of the Ottoman Empire’s foodways as they evolved over more than five centuries. Işın begins with the essential ingredients of this fascinating history, examining the earlier culinary traditions in which Ottoman cuisine was rooted, such as those of the Central Asian Turks, Abbasids, Seljuks, and Byzantines. She goes on to explore the diverse aspects of this rich culinary culture, including etiquette, cooks, restaurants, military food, food laws, and food trade. Drawing on everything from archival documents to poetry and featuring more than one hundred delectable illustrations, this meticulously researched, beautiful volume offers fresh and lively insight into an empire and cuisine that until recent decades have been too narrowly viewed through orientalist spectacles.

This lavishly illustrated volume is the first major global history of ornament from the Middle Ages to today. Crossing historical and geographical boundaries in unprecedented ways and considering the role of ornament in both art and architecture, Histories of Ornament offers a nuanced examination that integrates medieval, Renaissance, baroque, and modern Euroamerican traditions with their Islamic, Indian, Chinese, and Mesoamerican counterparts. At a time when ornament has re-emerged in architectural practice and is a topic of growing interest to art and architectural historians, the book reveals how the long history of ornament illuminates its global resurgence today. Organized by thematic sections on the significance, influence, and role of ornament, the book addresses ornament's current revival in architecture, its historiography and theories, its transcontinental mobility in medieval and early modern Europe and the Middle East, and its place in the context of industrialization and modernism. Throughout, Histories of Ornament emphasizes the portability and politics of ornament, figuration versus abstraction, cross-cultural dialogues, and the constant negotiation of local and global traditions. Featuring original essays by more than two dozen scholars from around the world, this authoritative and wide-ranging book provides an indispensable reference on the histories of ornament in a global context. The cross-cultural exchange of ideas that flourished in the Mediterranean during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries profoundly affected European and Islamic society. Gardens of Renaissance Europe and the Islamic Empires considers the role and place of gardens and landscapes in the broader context of the information sharing that took place among Europeans and Islamic empires in Turkey, Persia, and India. In illustrating commonalities in the design, development, and people’s perceptions of gardens and nature in both regions, this volume substantiates important parallels in the revolutionary advancements in landscape architecture that took place during the era. The contributors explain how the exchange of gardeners as well as horticultural and irrigation techniques influenced design traditions in the two cultures; examine concurrent shifts in garden and urban landscape design, such as the move toward more public functionality; and explore the mutually influential effects of politics, economics, and culture on composed outdoor space. In doing so, they shed light on the complexity of cultures and politics during the Renaissance. A thoughtfully composed look at the effects of cross-cultural exchange on garden design during a pivotal time in world history, this thought-provoking book points to new areas in inquiry about the influences, confluences, and connections between European and Islamic garden traditions. In addition to the editor, the contributors include Cristina Castel-Branco, Paula Henderson, Simone M. Kaiser, Ebba Koch, Christopher Pastore, Laurent Paya, D. Fairchild Ruggles, Jill Sinclair, and Anatole Tchikine.
