The Romans thought them sacred and built the famous Roman Baths, one of the highlights of any visit. Centuries later, Bath was the hub of Georgian society where the rich and famous came to "take the waters" but also to see and be seen. This is a step by step self-guided walk which will take you around Bath, and which includes maps for each section of the walk to make navigation as easy as possible. Visit the Lower town where the Baths and the Abbey are to be found, then climb up to the Upper Town to see the wonderful Georgian architecture of the Circus and the Crescent. Excerpt from the walk "The Season ran right through the cold and dark months, October to June. Aspiring mothers would bring their daughters to Bath to catch a husband, or at least to meet all the eligible young men. Jane Austen made use of the Assembly rooms in two of her novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. Charles Dickens also used the rooms in The Pickwick Papers where he satirised society in Bath."
