"Type Lore is intended to supply the main facts regarding the development of types. It seeks to aid comprehension and remembrance by an ostensible discussion of the present day's most popular faces of type, which, considered in the order that their ancestors came upon the scene, serve as a background for relating the leading facts of typographical lore." -foreword.

Excerpt from Type Lore: Popular Fonts of Today, Their Origin and Use; The History of the Art of Topography Succinctly Related for Practical Men Though excellent and thorough, most available works on the history of typography contain too much detail matter for readers whose previous study, if any, has been slight. With minor movements and personalities considered along with the major ones - by periods or nations - the general and the newer readers are confused by the array of detail and in consequence often fail to grasp the main features in their order. Still another effect of all this detail - for initial study at least-is that it causes many to regard the subject a dry one. I know because they've told me 50. Yet every printer or typo grapher who is worthy of the name ought to know just how and from what his craft has developed, and the men who have achieved greatness through their efforts in the art preservative of all arts. Type Lore is intended to supply the main facts regarding the development of types. It seeks to aid comprehension and remembrance by an ostensible discussion of the present day's most popular faces of type, which, considered in the order that their ancestors came upon the scene, serve as a background for relating the leading facts of typographical lore. I am pleased to contemplate my invisible audience as real workers, but not as bibliophiles - in short, fellows who at the case actually Stick type or at their desks plan typographical design. Hence the recommendations as to suitability and the suggestions for the practical use of the various types. As you read Type Lore you will find many prominent and capable men quoted throughout. This is consonant with my idea that a book should be written for the benefit of its readers and notfor the author's own exploitation. This book is a presentation of what one, separating the wheat from the chaff, has found by number and calibre of proponents to seem authoritative. First published in 1930, this volume aimed to provide an overview of folk-lore which contrasted with the Anthropological school. Consciously working in the legacy of Savigny and the Brothers Grimm, the author explored the unrecorded traditions found within popular fiction, custom, belief, magic and ritual, attempting a reconstruction of humanity’s spiritual history through popular rather than elite voices. The work was intended to prove useful to scholars of related fields to folk-lore, with hopes of eventual interdisciplinarity.

The original elementals themselves have been expanded to include proud nobles, determined guardians, and pesky haunts. Each creature is designed with a role in mind, from grudge monsters to chase monsters. With more than 30 new elementals, six new creatures with elemental sub-types, and four new prestige glasses, Elemental Lore provides dozens of options for unleashing the power of the elements upon your gaming group.

This book had its genesis in the following piece of computer mail: From allegra!joan-b Tue Dec 18 89:15:54 1984 To: sola!hjb Subj ect: 1 i spm Hank, I've been talking with Mark Plotnik and Bill Gale about asking you to conduct a basic course on using the lisp machine. Mark, for instance, would really like to cover basics like the flavor system, etc. , so he could start doing his own programming without a lot of trial and error, and Bill and I would be interested in this, too. I'm quite sure that Mark Jones, Bruce, Eric and Van would also be really interested. Would you like to do it? Bill has let me know that if you'd care to set something up, he's free to meet with us anytime this week or next (although I'll only be here on Wed. next week) so we can come up with a plan. What do you think? Joan. xiv Lisp Lore (All the people and computers mentioned above work at AT&T Bell Laboratories, in Murray Hill, New Jersey. ) I agreed, with some trepidation, to try teaching such a course. It wasn't clear how I was going to explain the Lisp Machine environment to a few dozen beginners when at the time I felt I was scarcely able to keep myself afloat. Particularly since many of the "beginners" had PhD's in computer science and a decade or two of programming experience.
