Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 24: March 1960 Throughout East Africa agricultural researchers are continuously searching for crops that can be grown profitably so as to raise the income level of farmers. Currently the spotlight is on cocoa. If cocoa can be produced on a commercial basis for export, it would not only help the farmers but would add another crop to the very limited number that these East Afri can countries depend on for their foreign exchange earnings. Both Uganda and Tanganyika base their agricultural economy on cotton, cof fee, and tea, plus sisal in Tanganyika. Zanzibar is even more limited in that it can look only to cloves and coconuts for any sizable income. Cocoa, or cacao, as it is often called, comes from a small tree indigenous to the forests of Central and South America; but shortly before W'orld II, Africa took the lead in cocoa production. Today the African countries bordering on the Gulf of Guinea export two-thirds of the world's cocoa. Ghana, for example, depends almost entirely on cocoa. "Climate-smart agriculture, forestry and fisheries (CSA), contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals. It integrates the three dimensions of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental) by jointly addressing food security and climate challenges. It is composed of three main pillars: sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and incomes; adapting and building resilience to climate change; reducing and/or removing greenhouse gases emissions, where possible. The purpose of the sourcebook is to further elaborate the concept of CSA and demonstrate its potential, as well as limitations. It aims to help decision makers at a number of levels (including political administrators and natural resource managers) to understand the different options that are available for planning, policies and investments and the practices that are suitable for making different agricultural sectors, landscapes and food systems more climate-smart. This sourcebook is a reference tool for planners, practitioners and policy makers working in agriculture, forestry and fisheries at national and subnational levels." -- Back cover.

From Agriculture To Agricology written by Professor Dani Wadada Nabudere and has been published by Real African Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-01 with Social Science categories.

In this meditation, respected Ugandan academic Dani Wadada Nabudere traces the roots of the global economic crisis and warns of the threat that the decline of Western nations poses to the African continent—the final frontier for those in search of new lands and resources to exploit. As a deterrent to what he sees as the encroachment of super-profiteers looking to Africa for the land to increase their profits in industrial agriculture, Nabudere advocates for what he terms “community sites of knowledge,” that is, the use of indigenous tools and knowledge to revitalize the lives of Africa’s people. The book puts forth the belief that any dependence on imported knowledge and material instruments will only lead to the entrenchment of colonial stereotypes, and that indigenous knowledge is imbued with the roots of “complex ecosystems” that require the inputs of a diversity of expertise and experiences and that are capable of producing the knowledge necessary for the residents of the African continent to reclaim the future.
