This book examines the complex ways in which girls and women experience football cultures in Britain. It extends current debate surrounding women and football (namely, how gender has functioned to shape women’s experiences of playing the game), by focusing on organisational, administrative and coaching practices, alongside the particular issues surrounding sexuality, ethnicity and disability (not only gender). The book analyses football and gender to reveal the subtle forms of discrimination that persist. It is important to highlight the many challenges and transformations made by girls and women but more importantly to consider the ways power continues to operate to devalue and undermine girls and women involved in the game. The UK-based authors make use of their recent research findings to offer critical debate on girls’ and women’s current experiences of British football cultures. Overall the book reveals the present day complexities of marginalisation and exclusion. This book was published as a special issue of Sport and Society.

The revolution in information technology has resulted in innovations that are having increasingly important effects on the life of their users, in both their personal and work lives. In particular, the Internet and associated applications such as email and the World Wide Web have had profound impacts over the last twenty or so years that they have been in widespread use, raising issues about various types of "digital divide," including that between more and less developed nations. This thesis reports a study carried out on two continents, Europe and Asia, to compare and contrast the adoption of these innovations in a roughly comparable context, that of a University department. Interviews were carried out with 27 women drawn from administrative and academic staff in the University of Brighton (UK) and Kolej Universiti Teknikal Kebangsaan (Malaysia). The results were analysed under the following themes: 1. Differential email usage patterns; 2. Differential web usage patterns; 3. Affective issues around the use of email and Web; 4. Perceptions of the role of the Internet in everyday life; 5. Computer-Mediated and Non-Computer-Mediated communication

Caroline and her ex-army husband Mike embark on a trekking holiday in Nepal, where they meet Sandra, a divorcee in her sixties, and Jane, a single woman now free after the death of her elderly mother. When unexpected events leave Mike and Jane unable to complete the trek, Caroline and Sandra continue without them. During the trek without Mike, Caroline is surprised by the uplift in her mood. She is deeply affected by her experiences and, returning to the hotel where Mike and Jane have been recovering, Caroline is a changed woman. Faced with family problems, Caroline and Sandra acknowledge that their lives need to change and some very difficult decisions must be made. To be an unencumbered woman comes with a price, but are they willing to pay. This novella is framed by a collection of seven short stories, each of which explore women’s relationships with power. The short stories explore female struggles with sexuality, political ambitions, revenge and living with the consequences of their actions.

Sociopathy affects an estimated 1- 4% of the population, but not all sociopaths are cold-blooded murderers. They're best described as people without a conscience, who prey on those with high levels of empathy, but themselves lack any concern for others' feelings and show no remorse for their actions. Drawing on real life cases, The Empathy Trap: Understanding Antisocial Personalities explores this taboo subject and looks at how people can protect themselves against these arch-manipulators. Topics include: - Defining sociopathy, and related conditions such as psychopathy, narcissism, and personality disorder - How sociopaths operate and why they're often difficult to spot - Identifying sociopathic behavior - The sociopath's relations with other people and why they often go unpunished - Coping with the aftermath of a destructive relationship - Re-establishing boundaries and control of your life - Practical advice for keeping sociopaths at bay - Resources and further help.
