What defines a people? Is it their art or history? For a group of scholars closely involved with education and cultural transformation in Malaysia, the definition comes in unique and classically beautiful forms, like the Ukkil on the Barung of the Suluk people in Sabah. The main author, Nelson Dino, with the help of the co-authors, Baharudin Arus, Lokman Abd Samad and Jul-Amin Ampang had written a historically and culturally important book on the Suluk and their beloved Ukkil or art of carving. They focused on the Ukkil found on the Barung, arguably one of the best swords ever to come out of Southeast Asia. They discussed the historical, cultural, artistic, and social importance of the Barung and how Ukkil found on it can become an important part of the vehicle that can take Sabah into a more enlightened and harmonious place.

The visual arts of Mindanao have been influenced by cultural and religious diversity. Ukkil is the most important visual art attributed to the Philippine Muslims. However, the interpretation of Ukkil symbols particularly from Sulu archipelago varies according to its vast array of symbolism. In light of this matter, the study explores the different Ukkil symbols and other symbolisms coming from Christianity and other religions which are incorporated in a multimedia sculpture. The researcher hopes that this study will raise awareness on how a simple and rare form of art may become an expression of unity among Christians and Muslims in order to attain peace especially in Mindanao. Furthermore, as an artistic form, it hopes to promote interreligious unity and understanding. The sculptural pieces were made of steel metal motifs which were arranged as a relief sculpture placed in a light box and depict peace, hope and unity among Muslims and Christians.
