Non Alignment And Its Origins In Cold War Europe written by Rinna Kullaa and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-03-13 with History categories.

After World War II, Europe stood divided between two clearly defined and competing ideologies and systems of government. Within this context of confrontation and mutual hostility between the United States and the Soviet Union, Rinna Kullaa provides a unique analysis of the attempts of two European states to successfully avoid absorption into the Soviet bloc. This book explores the relations of Yugoslavia and Finland both with the Soviet Union, and with each other, as they strove to preserve and create their independence. Whilst at first attempting the neutralism strategy employed by Finland, in the face of Soviet hostility, Tito's Yugoslavia instead led the way to the founding of the Non-Aligned Movement in 1961. Kullaa's crucial analysis of the formative period of the Cold War will be of vital interest to students and researchers of International Relations, European History, the Cold War and diplomacy.

Histories of Public Diplomacy and Nation Branding in the Nordic and Baltic Countries provides an historical perspective on public diplomacy and nation branding in the Nordic and Baltic countries from 1900 to the present day. It highlights continuity and change in the efforts to strategically represent these nations abroad, and shows how a self-understanding of being peripheral has led to similarities in the deployed practices throughout the Nordic-Baltic region. Edited by Louis Clerc, Nikolas Glover and Paul Jordan, the volume examines a range of actors that have attempted to influence foreign opinions and strengthen their country’s political and commercial position. Variously labelled propaganda, information, diplomacy and branding, these constant efforts to enhance the national image abroad have affected how the nation has been imagined in the domestic context.

A Baltic League As A Construct Of The New Europe written by Marko Lehti and has been published by Peter Lang Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with History categories.

The emergence of the idea of Baltic Sea unity and of Baltic cooperation seem to be the issues which unify the two big epoch-making periods, the end of the First World War and the end of the Cold War. In both periods, the Baltic Sea connection has been seen to offer a coordinate for remapping the location of the eastern Baltic nations, the Estonians and Latvians, in particular. Why has the Baltic Sea area played so important a role as a construct of the new Europe? This is the question examined in this study, which focuses on the period after the First World War when the disintegration of European multinational empires meant a shift in the international system from the hegemony of a few great powers to the heterogeneity of small states. As a part of this process, the concepts of sovereignty and national self-determination were redefined by the small states themselves so that they would manage to find their place in the world of the great powers. One expression of this transition period was a lively Baltic cooperation, which attained an exceptional pitch of intensity in the Europe of its time.

The Cold War And The Nordic Countries written by Thorsten B. Olesen and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with History categories.

During the Cold War the Nordic Countries were walking a tightrope, being located in the vicinity of the USSR-dominated red empire. This book contains five articles that evaluate Nordic Cold War research within its national context, with each contribution pointing to what has so far been achieved by existing research, what progress is to be expected from projects under way, and what seem to be the most important gaps to be filled in the future. Attention is given predominantly to presenting and discussing studies which have appeared in the post-Cold War period - with the exception of the Swedish contribution which presents a more general outline of Cold War research. Following these national contributions, the book concludes by taking up the comparative challenge. The book is a logical point of departure for researchers who want to work with Nordic Cold War history, especially on a truly comparative basis.
