The Muster Roll of the province of Ulster is a large, leather-bound volume in the British Library. The volume consists of 283 folio sheets on which are recorded the names of 13,147 males from the nine counties of Ulster. Each county forms a seperate section of the volume and the men who mustered are listed under the names of their landlords; beside each man's name is a description of the weapons he was carrying or a note that he was unarmed. Most of the men who mustered were English and Scottishn settlers and, in the absence of comprehensive parish and estate records, the muster rolls is the nearest one has to a census of the British population of early seventeenth-century Ulster. This edition includes much supplementary information on the settlers, drawn from numerous contemporary sources.

The significant contributions to the development of modern society made by Ulster men and women are often overlooked in current assessments of the province and its people. This book aims to redress the balance somewhat by providing an appreciation of the lives of nine people of Ulster origin who deserve to be remembered both for their personal achievements and for their public importance. The lives included have emerged from a variety of backgrounds and span a period of some four centuries. Some carried with them a warm appreciation of their origins, and a few returned either to visit or remain in Ulster as their lvies drew to a close. Others sustained the Ulster side of their identity quietly, even unsuspectingly. If the latter are harder to detect, their discovery for the reader will be all the more rewarding. Of the eight men and one woman - scientists, soldiers, politicians, clergyman, artist, scholar - few have been remembered, except perhaps by obituarists, as being of Ulster origin. The importance of their roots is best conveyed by the telling in these pages of their individual and compelling stories.

For although you have not to go far to get stories of Finn and Goll and Oisin from any old person in the place, there is very little of the history of Cuchulain and his friends left in the memory of the people, but only that they were brave men and good fighters, and that Deirdre was beautiful. When I went looking for the stories in the old writings, I found that the Irish in them is too hard for any person to read that has not made a long study of it. Some scholars have worked well at them, Irishmen and Germans and Frenchmen, but they have printed them in the old cramped Irish, with translations into German or French or English, and these are not easy for you to get, or to understand, and the stories themselves are confused, every one giving a different account from the others in some small thing, the way there is not much pleasure in reading them.
