The Lactuca genus, which is characterized by a variety of forms including annual, biennial and perennial, glabrous or pubescent herbs with abundant latex, belongs to the Asteraceae family. Lactuca is an essential source of phytochemicals and is used in traditional medicine. The authors discuss Lactuca sativa's anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, analgesic, sedative and neuroprotective effects. The antibacterial effects of Lactuca sativa extracts are evaluated using the microwell dilution method against a wide range of clinical isolated bacteria, and the antioxidant effects are tested using ferric-reducing antioxidant power and catalase activity assay. The genetic transformation of lettuce is examined in conjunction with the applications of this transformation in plant biotechnology. The potential for Ulva lactuca to be used as a bioindicator of contamination is studied, as well as its capability to be employed for the removal of pollutants. The authors explore the hypothesis that if a sufficient amount of free vitamin B12 can be incorporated into lettuce leaves grown under hydroponic conditions, lettuce could become an excellent source of vitamin B12 for vegetarians and elderly people.

Ulva as an aquaculture crop and IMTA component species has received mixed results globally; success has been achieved in South Africa and Israel, whilst in Europe the results have been poor. This project aims to determine if Ulva lactuca is a suitable candidate as an inorganic extractive species component within marine IMTA systems in British Columbia. The inorganic extractive feasibility of U. lactuca was determined with combination of real time growth and nutrient uptake experiments, alongside a SWOT analysis and literature review to reveal the possible potentialities and pitfalls. U. lactuca was cultivated in 680 litre tanks in the effluent of Wolf Eels, Anarrhichthys ocellatus in a recirculation system at the Aquatics facility at the University of Victoria. Growth experiments of wild local U. lactuca strains attained summer growth of up to 17.43% specific daily growth rate, with winter growth of up to 4.26% specific daily growth rate. U. lactuca demonstrates a preference for Ammonia-N uptake over other forms of inorganic nitrogen and a reduced nutrient uptake capacity during dark periods. Nitrate uptake capacity up to 202um N gDW-1 day-1 was exhibited. These figures display the excellent biological potential of local Ulva lactuca strains to act as an inorganic extractive. However currently, long term maintenance of the crop proved problematic with instability with growth rates and nutrient uptake capacity. Cultivation issues in combination with poor economic outlook will restrict the feasibility of this species to specific types of IMTA system. Beneficial steps towards the deployment of U. lactuca inorganic extractive components would include: (i) the identification of suitable sterile strains or employment of "germling" spore production, (ii) the use of a rotational, light weight, cage cultivation system, (iii) being farmed in combination with a dark period nutrient removal species, such as Chondrus crispus, (iv) being farmed in conjunction with in-situ algivorous species.

This catalogue, which integrates nearly 35,000 records of benthic marine algae from the Indian Ocean into a taxonomic classification comprising 3,355 specific and infraspecific taxa in 629 genera, will greatly facilitate future work in this region. The bibliography of 4,000 references is the largest list of phycological literature ever published. The extensive taxonomic and nomenclatural notes are of paramount importance.

The Arab Republic of Egypt enjoys a vital strategic location. Its northern border is the Mediterranean Sea, and its eastern border is the Red Sea, which give it a special significance from the bio-diversity point of view as a coastal zone, and as a sensitively diversified ecosystem. The shoreline of the Arab Republic of Egypt is about 3,000 km long. It is about 1,150 km long on the Mediterranean and about 1,850 km long on the Red Sea, which are connected by the Suez Canal, which is about 193.30 km in length. The three water masses are different ecologically and are experiencing wide range of pressures due to, eutrophication, coastal development, aquaculture and climate change. These conditions resulted in several species of seaweeds that adapt to these pressures and expand their living boundaries while others may fade away. Accordingly, the study of seaweeds biodiversity in the Egyptian marine waters is of great concern globally and constitutes an important element of global change research. The present book entitled Biodiversity of Seaweeds in the Egyptian Marine Waters summarizes our current understanding of the biodiversity of seaweeds in the Egyptian marine waters. It is a timely publication based wholly on primary data which were collected through extensive field studies conducted over the years covering the marine Egyptian waters and culminate the efforts of the Egyptian phycologists. The book contains high-quality images of some species in their existing habitats. This book gains critical importance from the fact that the Egyptian marine environment is witnessing rapid development, which will no doubt have a bearing on the coastal environment – and the baseline data on seaweed biodiversity would be useful to understand changes that may arise from physical changes in the environment as also pollution load and climate change.
