Os fármacos são apresentados como substâncias capazes de interferir nos processos bioquímicos para restabelecer a dinâmica do fluxo metabólico. A célula viva é um sistema aberto que troca matéria e energia com o meio externo, estabelecendo um fluxo contínuo e dinâmico de metabólitos capaz de responder a sinais do próprio organismo e do meio externo. Numa célula saudável, a dinâmica metabólica está continuamente ajustando-se às necessidades imediatas e de longo prazo em resposta a uma assombrosa quantidade e variedade de sinais regulatórios numa orquestração fantástica de ativadores e inibidores enzimáticos. Uma condição patológica caracteriza-se pela incapacidade da célula de lidar tanto com fatores intrínsecos do próprio metabolismo como com fatores externos a ele.
