Este trabalho realiza um estudo sobre as Cartas de um viajante francês, a um amigo residente em Paris, sobre o caráter e estado presente de Por- tugal. As cartas foram escritas em francês, sendo posteriormente vertidas para o português. A redação das cartas foi provavelmente feita no decorrer do ano de 1782, sendo a primeira carta datada de 2 de fevereiro. Contudo, a sua tradução para o português foi feita dois anos depois, no ano de 1784. O autor anônimo se apresentava como um viajante que faz a intermediação entre duas culturas. Ele não escondia que dominava dois universos culturais distintos e que fazia comparações a fim de seus relatos fossem mais interessantes e inteligíveis. O ser humano tem a necessidade de organizar o seu mundo e para tanto ele concebeu a apresentação da sua viagem organizada em cartas, procurando dar maior sentido as suas observações. As cartas procuravam dar uma ordenação lógica para o espaço geográfico, o espaço habitado, os seres humanos e os costumes lusitanos. Ao redigir ele tinha em mente contrapor dois mundos sociais diferentes, e para não incorrer em erros, fazia um registro pautado pela prudência. Sabia que seus comentários não poderiam agradar a todos. Por conseguinte, ele lembrava no decorrer das cartas que algumas observações deveriam ser mantidas em sigilo, evidenciando uma prudência política.
